I would like to replace my leaky old cowl vents with the Nicro Solar vents either the Powervent 3000 or the Day and Night 2000. I searched the archives and found quite a bit of information. The one thing I couldn't get an answer to is: How are they at keeping out rain? Can you leave the boat for 1 to several days without closing them up and not come back to wet cushions or other interior stuff? They claim to be "water resistant" whatever that means. -Smitty

Nico Vents

I had them on two other boats for years, and never got any water below. They have a pretty good trap system. Now, understand this is SoCal, so we get little rain. Howsomever, we tend to get it all in a couple of storms, so it's still a decent test ;) . Also, even when shipping some water over the bow, didn't get any in. Got to order some for my current boat. Thanks for reminding me. don't forget that they are available through this site. See the link. Rick D.

Good to go

I have one on my forward hatch here in Michigan. We get rainstorms all spring, summer and fall and I've kept my vent in the open/exhaust position all the time and no water has gotten in. I recommend them.

Mine never leaked

Had several of them over the years and never had a lead. I expect that the cowl vent is probably more vulnerable to leaking than the solar vents.

Just replaced a leaking one but

I just replaced one that was leaking but it was not mounted flat to the deck but at a large angle. I think this was causing it to leak. Another owner who had one reported it as leaking also. I think if installed properly which mine was not by the previous owner they should be fine. Just check it for awhile to make sure it doesn't leak.

Bought a catalina 27 with a Nicro solar vent

on the front hatch. Don't know the model, but it had a battery so it ran at night. It was a couple of years old when I got it, and it was running great when I sold the boat three years later. The boat was at a buoy all year in Degnen Bay, Gabriola Island, BC. We get a LOT of rain sometimes. I never noticed any drips or leaks from the vent. I was very glad for the positive ventilation. Kept the boat sweet all year. I bought a cheaper, unknown brand solar vent for another boat, and it worked fine for several years before I sold it. Same wet winters with no problem. I found the vent motor noisy sometimes on a quiet evening. I finally figured out how to unplug it from the battery. A day only one (no battery) would probably do the job, and you could turn it off with a bucket over the vent.

Had One

I had one on the front hatch and never had a leak, never closed even in winter on the hard. It kept the boat smelling fresh always and will be adding on my new boat too. Nick

Never leak

I am up here in NY and actually left mine in for the winter this year (wet-stored) - nothing comes in and it ran all winter. Worth the money. Rob

Cutting the hatch...

I just purchased the Day Night vent. What did you use to cut the 3.75" hole?

A 3 3/4 inch hole saw! If there is already a hole

there but it is too small cut the 3 3/4 inch hole in a piece of scrap wood and use that as a guide for the saw for the new hole. ewdit to add I have four Nicro water trapper vents in the cabin on Bietzpadlin and even during Isabel we didn't get any water in and during the winter two feet of melting snow does not get water into the cabin.

Buried the bow

Have one in the forward hatch. Buried the bow in a freighter wake on Delaware Bay and only a couple of drops of water came in. Never any from rain, even in a monsoon. I leave it in the exhaust mode all year round and it keeps the cabin fresh. As far as installation is concerned I couldn't find the appropriate sized hole saw so used a skill saw, very carefully. Go for it.

Thanks all ...

it sounds like I really should do this. So, I will. I had trouble with the dorade boxes leaking, but with these solar vents installed instead of the cowl vents, I can quit worrying and trying to fix the dorades. Thanks again, -Smitty

Just did a search on Nicro....

.. on this site, and was directed to a product that was a solar vent, but not a Nicro product. If you want Nicro, take a close look at what you are directed to Jeff

The new Sea Dog solar vents are super!

They are about half the price of Nicro, work as well if not better, and do not leak. We had a cloudburst last evening while on the boat, and not a drop came in.
