I just bought the 3" Nicro day/night plus. It is going into the fore deck ( just ahead of the mast on my Hunter 28.5 - there's a light curve to the deck so I got the "fixed " unit with the 4 "feet" rather than the rounded flat pith helmet style. I figure the removable would catch the jib lines under the "floating edges" of the mushroom and over the side it will eventually go!. the fixed & "footed" unit on a curved deck provides less opportunity for the jib line to get caught under the rim- or so I hope. There's not much info at nicro/ marinco about how to get these up and running - I left sitting "charging" in direct sunlight for a day- switched it to ?on? and nothing turns - prop is free floating. What am I missing - the motor and battery are hermetically sealed - (I think) from the looks of it. There's not much of anything under the solar panel I figure on using vinyl anchor sleeves on the deck screws- so there's less chance of cracking the 3 deck fastening holes. I was really disappointed that nicro/marinco has no informational specifics/pdf on this unit- in the box or on their website. If you sealed the deck cutout - what did you use? I thought to use autobody filler to seal the deck core "wall" within the cutout shaft. I like working with that better than the marine deck patch epoxy mix- and nobody sees it either. Also I am concerned if there may be any embedded wires in the H28.5 deck just fore of the mast that I gotta worry about. I stand with my feet spread when I douse the main so there's little chance of stepping on the solar unit- unless I'm a complete idiot. Thanks for any info you might volunteer.

Nicro Instruction Manual

You can view the install and operation manuals at this site, pages 16 to 18. Looks like the battery comes packaged separately and needs to be installed by the buyer.

So many

I have seen so many different models that not sure which one you have. If I remember when i installed mine in the bow hatch and used selicon sealer with the rubber gasket that include in the box. My first one had a rechargeable battery and the one on my new boat I think has a rechargeable battery also. I also have a on and off switch, maybe the thing needs to be charged but if not maybe you should take the thing apart and see that the battery is hooked up properly. I had no problem with mine working right away and instruction came with it, maybe it was opened or returned to the store because of problems. Nick

thanks but I looked thru that pdf - my "Plus" model not mentioned- besides the battery is not accessible- its integrated with the fan motor and its all sealed within the housing. I've seen some other models that have a battery that fits into a "pocket" in the mushroom head and has a gasket and clear cover- mine has none of that. BTW- I decided not to go the forward hatch mount- the hatch has structural cross members criss-crossing the under side and secondly - I "hang" a 5 watt solar panel under it to maintain the starting battery while I'm away.

Return it - Sounds like something is wrong

I bought two last season. One never charged so I returned it. Also, when I had them both working and installed one died. I had to take it apart (assuming it was a dead battery) and found a broken sodder. After a new battery and quick repair it works great. BTW - To get to the battery and solar panel in mine - I had to remove the stainless cover. Just bend open the 4 tabs on the under side of the vent. Hope this helps.

thanx again

I've got a post into nicro/marinco and will call WM tomorrow- maybe will get a swap-out- this time I'll take it outside and hold it into the light to ensure the thing works.
