We made it! I took my fiancee on her first overnight trip on my boat and it was a success despite a few hardships. She is quite a trooper!

We had excellent wind from Colonial Beach until we made it to St. Clements Island. We ended up motoring into Breton Bay and up to Lenoardtown, MD. We enjoyed a visit ashore and excellent dining at the Mexican Restaurant in town (the food was excellent and the service was second to none).

Today we did hit some wind. Nice steep waves where they were churned up by a nice 25 knot sustained wind. It lasted until I could go over to the windward shore and then we motor sailed home under a reefed main (slightly over powered in a few of the really strong gusts).

She enjoyed the trip and we had a good time. The sunset in Breton Bay was amazing. All in all it was a success.

Glad to hear you a great time Matt. I was watching Pete watch the guys who were sanding and painting his bottom. It was a stay in the slip and get things done for me.

That is great! Glad you two had a good time. Any Fiancee' that is out in small craft warning conditions that has a good time is a keeper in my book.

It was great a little up the river too

Matt, Went out both days out of Quantico with 15-20 knot winds both days. Little more chop today, but that just kept the power boaters in the marina and now wakes. Really excellent sailing, even the crew enjoyed it.

Congratulations, glad to hear you had a superb weekend. After those winds, she'll be saying: "Boy, Matt, where's the wind, these little 12 knot zephyrs are boring!"

12 knots is about ideal for my boat. She still is getting use to "Living on the lean" when the boat is over. She is okay to 15 degrees. Once I hit 20-25 degrees she gets a little uneasy. Knowing that she is like that I thought to reef early and not sail it home, which was slightly upwind and gusty.

I carry a 100% jib aboard and I can change out my 155% on my furler for it. It makes for nice sailing in heavier air but I rarely change it out because of laziness. It also doesn't have a sun cover on it so I can't leave it up.

Jim...I tried to hail you on Saturday and I didn't get an answer so I figured that you weren't coming out. I met John and Honey over there at Breton Bay but couldn't get them to muster the motivation to put their dingy in the water off of the foredeck to go ashore for dinner. Oh well, maybe we will meet up with everyone later in the season.

I, too, used to get uneasy when the heel exceeded 15 degrees. Reefing early is the right thing to do. In fact, if you can find an old copy of "Cruising Rules: Relationships at Sea" by Roland Sawyer Barth, I strongly recommend it. The book is no longer bieng published, but it gives a humorous, yet useful, look at maintaining civil relationships while sailing. One of the "rules" in the book is "reef early and often." :)

To get me used to heeling, my husband would let me control the mainsheet. At first, I would dump it every time a gust hit, but over time, I got more used to heeling and would ease instead of dump. Now I'm less likely to do either, or if I ease, just a little bit. Combined with my husband's helsmanship, we do pretty well in the nasty stuff now. But it takes time... and milage.

Sounds like a good first weekend!
