For Orion's Child and any others who were there, Saturday evening at Worton Creek was simply awesome. A beautiful sunset followed by a clear and star filled night. Tom send me a note and I'll forward you some pics.

Great Pic

Real nice pic of a great night.

Easy Wind is back in Riverside. We are back to work. We did have that last nice evening though. Spent it on a mooring in Georgetown.

Wednesday nite on Worton Creek

had a bazillion teeny Tricorythodes Mayflies emerging just before sunset. There were so many it was like it was snowing. The fish were 'boiling the water' to get at the mayflies; spider webs were so filled they were like quilting frames. The sunset was similar to Sat & Sun.
You dont get Mayflies with polluted water so this emergence gave me some hope for the bay.

Great Shot!

In case you dont know it, the inside of Worton has for some time had half of the moorings removed after a legal dispute .... so the 'inside' now a decent place for a hidey-hole in a NW blow for those with less than 6ft. drafts.

:).

No mayflys on Sat

Rich luckily there weren't any mayflys on Saturday. Just a crystal clear evening. Thanks for the info on the inside, I wasn't aware they pulled some of the moorings.

Deadhead

Deadhead, glad you got back OK. Hope you enjoyed your night on the mooring in Georgetown. The view of the sunset from that end of the river can be spectactular. How was the dock party at Riverside? Did you attend?

Hi Mike,

I sent an email to you through your profile.

Rich, we drop our hook outside of Red 2 on light evenings. It's a bit cooler out there. I know that since they pulled those moorings there's plenty of room inside. We'll tuck in there for some protection if needed.

For Worton Creekers....

The last time I was overnighting in Worton Creek (last season) I had been warned by a friend who keeps a boat there on a mooring that the Maryland Marine Police hide in that little creek just north of the marina. They swoop out and nab anyone, in any kind of vessel, who is not wearing or carrying a PFD. This friend said they really like to ticket people in dinks going from their boat to the marina to pick up supplies, etc. Sure enough, we no sooner put the hook down there when we saw a Police Boat lock onto a guy in an inflatable. Not sure of the outcome.

Is this still going on there?

Not that I've witnessed

Warren, we've been there a number of times and haven't even seen a marine police boat let alone watch them pull someone over. I have a fried who keeps his boat at Handy's Wharf. I'll have to remember to ask him about it. Not really a problem for us as we keep the proper vests, flares etc on board the dink whenever we're out in it.

MD Marine Police on Worton Creek .....

In June, the Maryland Water Nazis were active by 'protecting and serving' on Worton Creek with a new wrinkle to prey on and extract lucre from the unwary. This recent excursion into 'legal thuggery' was: if you didn t have a **whistle firmly attached to your PFD** you got cited. Anyone and everyone in a dinghy was being stopped. No one that I know has been able to find this 'absolute requirement and extremely important safety requirement' in the MD boating laws. This legal robbery went on during June but its been quiet since. Probably the Nazis are in someother venue 'protecting & serving' their prey species and raking in $$$$ for the state. I have been stopped so many times in Annapolis harbor for such 'crap' that I hardly ever go there anymore.

Can random body cavity searches soon happen to the boaters of the Chesapeake ??????

Dock Party

Mike - We did get back in time for the dock party. Left Georgetown 0550 Saturday & arrived in Riverside 1900. Told Gary the first order of business was a shower though. After that my girlfriend poured him a birthday Southern Comfort over ice.

Curious - how did you know?

PFD's

The PFD issue seemed to be the great concern for the Marine Police which I've witnessed in Swan Creek. I did try to get them to pull over a go faster that had just run full tilt alongside us when anchored behind Hart Miller Island but they could only respond if you got the registration numbers and a description of the operator, Yeah right!

**whistle firmly attached to your PFD** ????

you have to be kidding right?? Is that a Maryland state law. What a state! I got a ticket one time going to Rock Hall to look at a boat. It was a female trooper and she didn't give me a single MPH break. I couldn't believe it.

Look at all the thing the Cheasy has to offer.

1. Now wind in the summer.
2. Hot as heck in the summer.
3. Anywhere nice like Rock Hall is expensive.
3. Stupid laws.

I will say there are a lot of nice places to cruise to and tell you the truth I could use a little lighter air.

We had our first light air day last Saturday. It was blowing 0 to 8 MPH until 3:00pm when a solid 10 MPH kicked in from the south. The was the first day we had it wasn't blow 12 to 25 MPH.

I know Gary

I've know Gary for over 34 yrs. We both worked for the same company, although he just took an early retirement package. We were tempted to attend but it's a long ride back to PA after a party. I figured you were at GW's and if so you'd know of his party.

Whistles on PFDs?

Rich, I have whistles on my inflatables but not the PFDs I carry in the dinghy. You do have to carry a air horm or other sound device but a whistle being mandatory on the PFD I've never heard of. Chances are they figure nobody would take them to court and fight it so they did as they pleased.

Jim, you must be on the NJ coast if you have too much wind. Several years ago we were out of Farley in AC and if there was a reason you stayed in port it was too much wind, not too little. We moved to the Bay in 2000 and have never looked back. We no longer enjoy a 2 hour tack down the coast but there are so many places to cruise to on the bay there's just no comparison. We still get in a lot of sailing dispite the bay's reputation for no summer air.

Mike, I know

there are many a day a say too windy and stay in port. If there is a lighter air day I run out and enjoy a nice relaxing sail.

We like 10+

Jim, we have a 36' with a roller furling main and unless we have 10+ I don't bother to pull the sails out. Very often we get to sail for a portion of our trips which helps satisfy my needs. We could sail even more if we didn't mind tacking frequently. On short trips we do just that but if we have a 4 to 5 hr run it becomes more about getting there vs sailing. As I said before there are so many places to cruise to or drop the hook it's a compromise we're willing to deal with. I did love beam reaching up or down the coast from AC, having the dolphins surf with us, etc. Just no place to get to and back in a resonable amount of time.

Mike,I'll take 6 or 7

We have a tall rig no furling main and a 135 jib C-36 and we'll move 4.5 kt in 7 MPH wind.

Cape May annually

Jim, the closest we come is a run to Cape May every summer. Of course we deal with De Bay not the ocean so it's still not the same. I have an itch to make the run to New England one of these years. I just need the wife to get more vacation. If I do then I'll get all the ocean sailing I want.
