Egmont is a great place for an all day visit or two.
But my experience is similar to other posters-probably only one day out of ten is it smooth enough to anchor near by and get a relaxed sleep. As an anchorage alternative, you could also duck into Bimini Bay on Anna Maria Island just to the south. It is usually mill pond calm and a great place to slumber. It is surrounded by houses and not hospitible to exploring. The channel is wide and well marked and is on a S.E. diagonal from the bay side of Egmont. There is also a marina named Gallanti's on the starboard side of channel entrance that has a laid back but good restaurant. At Egmont, the bayside is deeper next to shore. The Gulf side is much more shallow. BEWARE of the sand bar shoals on each end of island. They extend from both ends toward the West. They go out further and are more shallow than seems possible. Don't even think about cheating the charts here. Once you are around these and more mid Island, you can ease in closer to the beach depending on your draft. Part of the old fort is in the water and you can anchor near by if it is calm.(over the years, the island has moved east). If the winds are calm, you can anchor closest to shore near the light house on the N.E. bayside. There are several shaded picnic tables near by but no concessions and no facilities. You must pack in everything you desire and carry out all trash. If staying all day, I would take a beach umbrella and don't forget a disposable waterproof camera for some of the surprises that await. I have taken many friends to Egmont and we always have a blast. Somedays when sitting on that beach, you would swear you were on an out island in the Bahamas! I hope you have a great time.
