Anyyone have Nexus sailing instruments (Brunton/Silvea), or know much about them? i'm interested, but the manufacturer's website and docs, though pretty good, leave a lot of unanswered questions. What exactly does the Server do? Can GPS be connected to the "stand alone," i.e., non-server network? Thanks, jv

I have the entire system.

Jim: I have the entire System 3000. The server is basically a CPU that ties all instruments together. Your output is your display/s. You can have a single display that will provide multiple functions or you can have multiple displays. The displays daisy chain together and you can have something like 32 of them. The nice part of this is you can have one or two displays at the chart table and have a multi-display and some specialized ones at the helm. I do not think you can use the GPS with individual instruments. You can print out the installation and user manual from their web site. If you purchase a small unit (SYstem 1000) you just need to add on the other transducers to turn it into a System 3000. Several of the electronic dist. are recommending the Nexus system for price and performance. PS: I am installing this system in the next few weeks.

I installed aNexus system on my Cal 33. The server is the brains of the system. All inputs from sensors, Speed,Depth, Wind speed,Ect., go to the server. The display units retrive information from the server. I installed the Server, two multi display units, depth transducer, speed transducer and wind speed/direction. The system works very well. The multi display units can display all information by simply changing screens, With two displays I can have all information displayed at once. The instructions say that the GPS unit will input into the server as well as any RS 232 signal. So far the system work well. Ron Eddleman

JV, about your GPS question.

Not sure I understand. What do you mean, "tie into the non-server network"? What is that? And why would you not connect the GPS to the server? I also have the complete system but, so far, only the one "multi" display at the helm. The system just makes sense because of the ease of installation, ability to daisy-chain the displays(you do not have to wire each one from the server), and the myriad of display options. Heck of a system for the price. My plan is to add the analog wind display at the helm and another multi at the nav station. Then when my old Signets quit working(depth and log) I'll add the big digital displays in those holes on the cabin.

Can be used as individual instruments too.

Ed: What he is referring to is the fact that you can wire the transducers directly to the instrument, they do not need to have a server to tie them together. I agree, if you shop around the packaged systems are about the same price. The real advantages are that the fuctions can tie together if you have a server!

Didn't know that.

So Steve, you are saying this is possible with Nexus? You can wire a depth display directly to the transducer? I thought the server was an amplifier, not just a router. Why else have 12 volts to the server? Makes sense to not need a server I guess if you only wanted a log and/or depth instrument.

Options, options

Ed: There are several options. If you take a look at their site they have some diagrams for potentional setups. I think you can also wire two displays together without a server too. http://www.silva.se/bruntonmarine/ If someone really wants standalone instruments their Star series is probably a better way to go.
