I just discovered, while researching Nexus instruments, that they have a new line of instruments called NX2. They seem to be essentially the same as the existing digital line, except for new cases, new larger displays, improved illumination, and renamed and relabeled pushbuttons. Anyoen know any more about this? Pricing? Is the old stuff available anywhere at clearence prices? Thanks, jv

Saw that.

Checked the web-site(Related Link). Not sure I see the differences yet. I bought system 2000 from PYacht and the compass from Steve Dion. Looks like the price actually went up. I see that it is a little cheaper at Defender. So far I only have the one "multi" display, soon to add the analog wind. It is a really nice system, so easy to install and add to. Picture is of a friend's boat. Trying to remember the name of the newer system out of New Zealand. Cannot find it right now but very similar to Nexus.

Navman?

Ed: Could that system have been Navman? I think they are OEM for Standard and some other companies too.

Ed, How difficult to install Nexus Wind

Ed, I have the Nexus wind data with transducer and ~80 ft cable. How difficult is the installation with the mast up? Will be unstepping in the fall to move to Sandusky, would you recommend waiting till then? Bryce P.S. Boat currently has a Autohelm ST 30 Speed and seperate Autohelm ST 30 depth. I like how the Nexus system operates (with Multi Display), but am not prepared to replace Autohelm. Can I build a system around Autohelm or should I gradually build Nexus system starting with the Wind Data? Hope that these questions make sense. Hunter 336

Installation of wind.

Probably need to wait Bryce. A lot would depend upon two factors 1) finding someone to drill and tap the mounting holes at the top of the mast and 2) getting the wires into the cabin and attached to the server. I could not do #1, had to be horizontal. Our masts are different so cannot speak to #2. And #1 supposes that you have room up there. My old Kenyon has a large, thick, aluminum surface on top. It was pretty easy to install when only three feet off the ground. And that mast has a separate wiring channel behind the sail track. There is also the issue of function. Not sure what you will get without the fluxgate compass. What really makes it nice is the availability of true OR apparent. But that requires log(speed) input to the server. And you can feed that(NMEA) to the autopilot.

I'd wait.

Bryce: I would wait until you have the mast down. You need to fish the cable down the mast, fix the bracket etc etc. The Nexus system can run stand-alone or thru a CPU (server). So you can just use the wind instrument and a display for now. Then in the future you could change over if you so desire to a complete Nexus system. You may want to contact Nexus and ask them if the Nexus II and the one that you have will work together or not. I think that the new stuff is just new packaging, but I am not sure. I am also in the process of installing my Nexus system in the next month or so. If you need installation instructions, you should be able to find them on the internet.

Thanks for your input

Ed and Steve, I appreciate your responses. Will wait till the fall. Will also contact Nexus ref. future functionality. At least I can scratch that off my spring to do list. Thanks, Bryce

NEXUS sold to CommNAV

Not sure about the new Nexus instruments or that Navman is any pedigree of the original. I have communicated with the Nexus rep who informed me of the new organizational structure and it is as follows; Silva is the main company out of Sweden and will continue to manufacture the Nexus product line. Brunton Marine and Auto Nav were regional distributors for Nexus out of Washington State and Canada, respectively for North America. Auto Nav supplied Nexus (Silva) with the autopilot components, which by the way, the hydraulics are also supplied to B&G if my information serves me correctly and shared in engineering responsibility as well. CommNav bought all the distribution rights to Brunton and Auto Nav from Silva and will become the sole distributor for the products. They are a big company specializing in electronic marine controls and auto pilots for ships and yachts and I believe other venues as well. Over all this is a good thing for Nexus owners as the worldwide distribution of parts should improve greatly. Nexus has always been good about backwards compatability so I'm sure whatever comes out in the future will be interchangeable and I believe that thier existing line will continue anyway. I wouldn't hesitate to go with Nexus at all and I'm very pleased with the products that I've had in every way; price, performance and technical support have been great!
