keel winch support

i have been noticing a lot of winch support boards sit on top of the seats, mine sits between the seats and is supported by a stainless bracket on each end. gives a much more finished look and one less raised surface to trip on.

skeered

That's terrifying Gary! LOL I am hoping with both fingers crossed, that mine will slide out...I don't think that there is any lead involved, just three plates of cast iron...and the FG fairing. Gord, I imagine that looks much better than having the boards laying on top...I will keep that in mind. Thanks all,for the encouragement...I will keep things updated! Skip

Great Photos

Privateer Tradin: Glad to see that you are keeping a photo log of your boat. I have begun the same procdure with ours. Lots of work ahead of you with your new love, but you will certainly overcome all the obstacles. Keep sharing your experiences as I (for one) enjoy reading about situations other skippers run into (no pun intended). Right now, I am contemplating having our Yamaha 9.9 longshaft being rebuilt or simply buy a new one. For everyone's benefit, a business associate from Hawaii told me this week that most of the outboards in the Pacific were Yamaha. I did not know that. Captain Karl

Yahama

Karl, I heard that most everyone on the left coast had a Yahama, but once in Mexican waters realised that the "Yahamian" (hehehe) outboards down there were entirely different and none of the parts interchanged...Of course, I could be wrong...;-) I have decided to look for a long shaft 9.9 for mine...I don't know if I should just bite the bullet and have a dependable new motor for big bucks, or just see if the local marine mechanics can drum one up, and service it for me for medium sized bucks. Then there is also the prop thing...I have heard/read that I need a different pitch than would likely be found on the motor to start with... Thoughts? Skip

Prop Size

From my perspective almost all OB manufacturers have different models for various parts of the world. Honda will not honor a warranty in the US if you buy it from a Canadian source (A Honda dealer recently told me this). Props: 7.8" x 8" represents the theoretical distance the boat moves forward with one full rotation of the prop. Comparing a "standard prop" to one you might prefer for your sailboat: If you buy an OB with a 7.8"x8" it might work okay for you, but to push a sailboat through rough water at a slow rate...or, more importantly, to push a sailboat around a crowded marina, you might greatly prefer an 8"x6" prop. As I understand it, this prop will give you far better control at a slow rate of speed. Heck, once you reach hull speed you will never have difficulty with any prop...but at a slow speed, or just moving out...you will be much happier with something like an 8"x6" prop. If you are considering new...make sure you understand the weight of the motor and not just the shaft length. Tohatsu/Nissan are identical OB motors except for the cowling and name. They have a great reputation for reliability in the PacNW. You might also want to research the OB charging system if you plan to use it to also charge your electrical system. Not all motors are created equal. Hope this helps and I would be interested in any diverging opinions as I do not represent myself to be a professional source for this info. Happy Sails! Cap'n Karl
