Hi all. I've allways dreamed on owning my own sail boat and I have the oportunity to get my hands on a 98 Hunter 26 . The only sailing experience I have is from 3 races a J-30 from which I learned a lot about sailing, but it was quite some time ago. Anyways, is this boat easy, slick enough for a newbie sailor? Would be cool if I got some words from other 26 owners, not that I wont still buy it , the price is pretty good...Thanks and wish me luck.

Go for it.

I got a '97 h26 at the beginning of the season and my family and I love it. No reason it can't be sailed by a newbie. Just take your time to learn the ropes (pun intended). It's not a racing boat like the J's, so there is a lot less to deal with.The 26 offers tons of room and an easy to handle sail plan. If there's a wife or any women involved in your sailing, you can be that the enclosed head will be a BIG hit. we just bought a used 94 and love it, our previous experience was a j24, j boat lots faster but not as roomy. We take another couple and our dog along, easy to handle in 10-15 after that reef early. Nice to trailer and easy to care for. Have funs/v ILEAN (wifes name is Eileen)

Boat looks awesome!!!!

I just came from looking at the H26, the boat is in excellent condition. Too bad the seller couldnt make it to show me the inside, but from the outside it looks very very good. The only thing the owner had added is the bimini and a white patch that covers the whole hatch to protect it from the weather which looks pretty good. The only major concern is the bottom. Its on a split and the guy hasnt taken it out in months, he even recomended to take it out of the water to give it a good mantainance work on it. There is a cable that comes out of the bottom of the mast and goes through and opening of the deck (lights cable maybe?) which has some rubbery glusome adhesive that has to be replaced. Im taking a ride with the owner on saturday for the final checkup, what other things should I look at? Maybe some pointers would help...Thanks.

Great boat!

I just bought a '94 one-owner H26 in April. I used to sail a MacGregor 26 which I really liked, but this boat is a big step up. Weekend cruising is a pleasure what with the galley (you can stand up & cook), enclosed head & sink, large dinette table (which swings out to seat six people),queen size bunk under the cockpit,double v-berth in the bow. My boat had a lot of extras like roller furling, lazy jacks, lines led aft, and bimini. I mostly use it for spending the weekends "on the hook" but I just started racing w/our sailing club. Get a survey!

Get the boat surveyed by reputable sailboat surveyor before you buy. Great looking boats can have hidden major defects that can cost you big bucks. Check the boat out carefully yourself, and if everything looks good, call in the surveyor. It'll cost you $3-500 but could save you many times that amount. Don't take a chance.

YES!!!!!! Get a survey! It will be the best money you spend on the boat. Just looking at it and taking a sail is not going to tell you what you really need to know. Get a "GOOD" surveyor and let him tell you if it's a beautiful boat. Good Luck Ron
