I recently purchased an old Cat 27 with the Bryson Boy 59128 head. The head is inoperative--pump goes up and down, no reistance, nothing happens. I finally tracked down a rebuild kit and now am faced with the actual work. Is the disassembly/rebuild intuitive for the average Joe, or are there any pitfalls I should watch out for, or order I need to follow? Thanks in advance!

Have you tried....

I had the same issue and right before i rebuilt the head i used head lube. It worked! The suction came back and it started pumping again. i would try headlube before you burn your wallet and get your hands dirty. West Marine link below

I just came back from my boat, where I spent an hour or so rebuilding my Jabsco head pump with their service kit. It was no problem. The pump did not draw any water in the wet bowl position. I tried head lube over the weekend, but alas, it did not do the trick. I sprang for the full kit. (BTW, West Marine agreed to reduce their price from $62 to the $43 price I found online.) The installation of the new O-ring and gaskets was straightforward and no prblem, if just a little messy. Next time I will bring a long shaft phillips screwdriver, as one of the pump mounting screws was a pretty tight reach between the pump body and the bowl. I don't know your model toilet, but I can't imagine that the technology is much different than the Jabsco. Have fun! You might want to wear rubber gloves, and have your cell phone out of your pocket before you start, so that when your wife calls in the middle of the job, you're not slipping a wet hand covered with questionable bacteria into your pants pocket!
