I have been just talking about oil changes on another list. And I have changed oil on a number of different boat/engines (diesels) for many years. Buy a small oil removal pump (I used a Bigboy system for years) and insert the tube down the oil stick tube. Just have some paper towels when you remove the tube. Once the oil is out of the engine, generally on the other side of the engine you should change the oil filter. Take a sandwich bag, put it around the filter, turn and remove dropping the filter into the bag. Have more paper towels to clean up. Take some of the oil you've dripped and rub it around the new filter before you put it on. Then fill your engine from the top (there is a fill cap). I use Delo 30-40 oil but check your manual or call Yanmar and find out what they recommend.

At the same time you might want to change the oil on your transmission but i only do this every two or three years. It probably takes a different oil. Check that out first.

Some people like to change oil in the fall to get rid of contaminants and some even then change oil in the spring too but I live in a all around sailing year. I do my oil once a year.

Hope this helps.

you can purchase a hand operated oil change pump with at least 3quart capacity from west marine for around $50. The hand pump creates a vacuum and will draw the used oil out thru the dipstick tube. Run your engine first so the warm oil will flow. Oil pump can suck up any drips and spills. Replace with quality diesel oil and filter.

Good news is my neighbor had a pump - looks like this will work - have seen this on other boards referenced.

On my Yanmar 2GM20F (2 Cylinder) engine, I now use what Yanmar Dealers recommend, which is Shell Rotella T1 diesel engine oil. Check with your Yanmar dealer to be sure it's OK for your 1 cylinder diesel. I change mine every year in the fall at haul out time. I, too, run the engine about 15 to 20 minutes to warm it up. When using the tube on the oil extractor, connect the vinyl tubing to a piece of copper tube that will fit inside the vinyl tube. That way you can feel when you are at the bottom of the pan. The vinyl tub can "curl up" on you and the opening can be above the bottom, and you don't get all the oil out. The copper tube works well. Good luck, and welcome to the forum. There are a lot of folks here that are willing to help and give you good guidance.

Check out the other thread where the guys hose is stuck in the dipstick tube. Might be a good idea to run a gun cleaning brush through the tube once or twice to clear any gunk, and double check the hose fits loosely enough you can pull it out easily. Depending on the material the hose is made of the hot oil could swell the hose and then you have a problem. A better idea would be to use some metal tubing that slips down the dipstick tube, and attach the hose of your oil evac to the tubing.

It can drive you crazy reading about all the different oil ratings. Just stick with Shell Rotella T. It's for diesels, it's very good oil, and it's easily and cheaply purchased at Walmart or any auto parts store. I used to use a different oil in my 4 cycle outboard, but I put Rotella T in it now as well.

Good forum, guys!

It seems like the Op and I are in VERY similar situations...I hope he gets out cheaper than I have for my new "bini" baby!

I just found 1/2 a quart of "standard" generic SAE 30 type "c" oil , that says its for diesel machinery and automobiles, in one of the lockers on our H27. As my oil and air filters just came in the mail today; I too need to change my oil.
The motor is almost overfilled now, and the oil is about as dark and dirty as I've ever seen.

HOWEVER, there are a lot of statements about not "changing oil type"...and a highly suspect that the PO of my baby used the wrong stuff.
Anything i should worry about, specifically, when changing the oil? I'm not familiar with different types of oil, only viscosity and synthetic V natural oils...

If your unsure what kind of oil was in it, do a second or third oil change at 5 hour intervals.

What viscosity do you all use ?

I think I saw a chart somewhere that said recommended 15w-40.

Yet previous owner used straight 30 weight.

I'm putting in 15w-40 for diesel engines - OK ?

I looked in service manual - I cannot understand it. Thanks !

A good quality oil like Delo or Rotella will work year round in virtually all climate conditions you would operate a boat in. A straight 30 has much less additive and is thus a much better quality oil, but has a narrow operating range. At the far ends of the engine operating range 15W40 is a better choice, thinner when cold for easier starting, a bit heavier at higher temps to provide good cooling while maintaining pressure and film strength, and has proven itself in heavy duty diesels and fleet service.
