Some friends of mine are leaving today, sailing from the South Shore of Long Island to Bermuda. I think they are crazy. They are sailing a 36 Catalina, although the boat is in great condition, and they have a life raft, satelite phone and EPIRB I do not consider this a "blue water boat". The weather forecst is lousy, 15-25 MPH winds with gusts to 30 out of the west. The ocean is 4-6 feet locally, however it is predicited to be over 10 feet for the next few days further out to sea. I know boats can usually take more than the sailors can, and they did bring extra fuel in case they need to motor the entire trip. I know we have had these discussions before on this forum, but this time it is close to home as these are close friends of mine. Several of us have tried to talk them out of taking this trip, and we thought they would cancel due to the weather. We should be into some nice weather by now, but this spring has not been kind to us in the northeast. I would like to hear back from others who have made the trip, what type of conditions, boat size and model.

I don't agree with your concerns. Yes the wind is up, but as you say it is from the WNW which means your friends are running with great speed. I would be flying a spinnaker and the boat would be seeing speeds in the mid teens. This brings the apparent wind down to 10 to 15. If I had the time, I'd be out there with them. You should be jealous! :)

Beats hell outta Beey too!

I wouldn't sweat it too much. These guys are smart enough to have: EPIRB, Liferaft, Sat-phone (had one on a Mexico trip-Awsome!), sound pretty well thought out. A Catalina is an underrated yacht, not a MOrgan nor a Hansy, but I'd rather be in one that a Benateau, Jenneau or Hunter...;-) They'll be allright, the only factor I'd consider (if I were doing it) as a real danger, all hings considered, is the unlikely event of an early Cat II or III headin north...but they're lattitude is fairly high for that to be a realistic problem.

They will be Having a Blast while you worry

In the past, I have owned 2 catalina's. A 25 and a 30 and i loved them both. Although i dont own a catalina now, i'm still a great fan of them. As Capt Ron said, "A Catalina is an underrated yacht". I wouldnt think twice about taking one to Burmuda. It will be a great trip, so quit worrying and be envious, I know I am.

Lots of C36's been to Bermuda and back

I know that an older C36 (Palangi) entered the Bermuda 1-2 the last few times (Single handed out, double handed back home) and did fine. http://bermuda1-2.org/modules.php?name=Skippers05. Who are the people & what is the name of the C36 that is sailing? I am the C36MKII tech editor and I am very curious to know . Maybe like to reach out to them and have them write up something for the Mainsheet Like was mentioned before the recent high winds in the Northeast (20-30 kts WNW) should actually help them fly to Bermuda. I would be more concerned with the Tropical Storm Alberto that is tracking right through their paths. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at1+shtml/144536.shtml?5day Lets hope they make enough headway to be east of the storm before it gets north west of Bermuda

They sound Fine to me!

I cross the Gulfstream all the time in a 41 Hunter with 12 to 14's.I think they sound well equipped and unless the boat is structually unsound,I think they will be fine.As long as they stay out of the way of Alberto. Also,I think some of you should read about the Gentleman and his wife with little practical oceanic experience who recently bought a Hunter 340 in Florida and sailed it back to Europe with No liferaft,no Epirb, etc and did just fine.So much for never doing that in a Hunter!!!!!!!!!!!
