New York City this weekend

I posted this a while back but didn't get much of a response so I thought I'd try again... My wife and I will be in NYC this Memorial Day weekend and we're wondering if there happens to be any sail related museums or things of interest that are worth checking out. This will be the first Memorial Day weekend in a long time that we won't be on the boat so I'm hoping to get a fix out in New York.

I think the previous recommendations cover most of the boating related topics in NYC. You can also contact the maritime academy to see if they do tours or have anything to check out.

bring your foul weather gear, we've been getting nothing but rain here for nearly 2 weeks now, and it isn't supposed to let up until after the weekend

As former mayor Ed Koch would say, "Don't play three-card monte." As sailors City Island is a good place to visit. Three yacht clubs, lots of fish restaurnats, some interesting stores. Of course, when it rains there are a few museums and a Broadway show or two..

South Street Seaport touristy but a few big old boats you can self tour
leave Mom on Fifth and 50th and you will have all the time you need!

In addition to the great suggestions the other guys made, you may want to also visit the Air & Sea Museum on the USS Intrepid. There is aslo a sub open for visit as well. It's also a great day out for the family.

If you have time, you may also want to visit Sheepshead Bay in the southern most part of Brooklyn. It is a modern day fishing village with some real old time Boat and Yacht Clubs and some really great restaurants.......Go on-line and investigate before you go.

Fleet week is May 25 - June 1. Here is a great link showing all the ships that will be in this weekend, including the USS New York, in at Staten Island. A real treat to see up close.

I'm not sure how open to the public it is but NY Yacht Club's facility on 44th St. is pretty impressive. http://www.nyyc.org/clubhouse/
It is definitely a 'blue blazer' kind of place so I'd wear a suit and tie if you try to see it in person. It would probably help if you knew a member or belonged to an affiliated club.

The facility at the 79th Street boat basin is not a 'blue blazer' outfit and you could have lunch there by the river. There are some interesting boats docked in their little 'harbor'. You can walk there from the subway stop at 72nd St. & B'way and the park on the west side is quite nice all the way down to the Battery.

If it is fleet week then take the Staten Island ferry (both ways) to tour NY Harbor - cheaper and quicker then the Circle Line.
