Just watched the live Mayor Bloomberg press conference. He is asking for a voluntary evacuation of low lying areas of the city now. If you have a place to go, go now. They will decide early Saturday if they will make it a mandatory evacuation for the city. Right now they are forecasting 40 foot waves and a huge tidal surge. They are also saying Boston is going to get hit with these waves and tidal surge. Have not heard of a voluntary evacuation or possible mandatory evacuation plan for Boston but they say the flooding around Bost could be worse than New York City.

Hope all you sailors up there stay safe.

I just entered NYC harbor from the ocean. I plan to tie up in the NYC area for the duration of the storm. My reason for NYC was that the storm should pass NYC by about 4PM Sunday (in agreement with 7-8 computer models) and thats pretty close to LOW tide, so the storm surge of even 10-12+ ft. should be dampened by the lower tide instead of a +6 ft. full tide (I hope to hell this timing happens).

Im definitely getting off the boat (after careful and detailed 'boat prep') and heading 'west' until its over. Hope you all along the eastern seaboard ... do well and are safe during the storm.

Homans Creek but im taking her to Patchogue in the morning to get pulled. I was fine leaving her in and just doubling everything up till I started reading all these damn horror stories on these forums lol. I guess it's just first storm jitters. Never been through a hurricane as a boat owner. I'm sending best wishes your way.

The folks at Liberty landing Marina in Jersey City have accommodated me for a few days ... expensive but 'reasonable' with respect to trying to save ones boat. There are floating docks that can supposedly take 15+ ft. of storm surge and Im scheduled to be in the 'middle' of the docks where its somewhat 'protected'. Hope to hell that all the usual moored barges off 'The Battery' are cleared out as I wont enjoy one of those breaking loose and winding up 'entering' this marina.
I tried to get the boat hauled locally but understand that their 'usual' customers come first. Presently, Im on the N. Shore of Middle Long Is. and they were hauling boats tonight until well past 9PM. As soon as the thunderstorm / squalls let up tonight or early AM, Im heading west on LIS to attempt Hell Gate on the early morning slack for a Friday arrival in NYC. I dont like 'riding' through Hell Gate at full ebb current, but I will if I have to make into the Hudson R. on Fri.
My boat is 'complicated' and needs to be 'stripped', so that is gonna take the better part of a whole day ... and then scoot for home in Penna. but return to the boat on early Mon. We've been ever pressing towards NYC from 'down east' based on now changed forecasts for several days; should have done a 180 and headed back to Maine or further east ... once you roll the dice, you take what you gets. Oh well, the boat is insured but doesnt cover the hundreds and hundreds of hours of work that one never gets back in an insurance claim.

Here's hoping that the computer modeling predictions are wrong as 6 out of 8 have Irene passing well off of NYC but the NOAA/NWS is still insistent on a NYC 'hit' ... I hope, I hope NOAA is wrong and this damn storm goes a bit east.

Hope you all remain safe and secure during 'Irene'.

The current forecast is for the storm to be around category 1 in that area. I wouldn't be too worried, but do prepare, it could weaken more slowly or still pack a bigger surge. Katrina was actually a category 3 when it wiped the Mississippi gulf coast with 20'+ tidal surge. What will probably happen is all this preparation and nothing much happens, then people get complacent and think nothing much will happen next time.

Not sure how you qualify that. 40 foot waves are rather common with a hurricane passing directly over a coastline. It is such a rare event in that part of the US people do not always remember. The last strong storm to directly impact that area was in 1944. It only had gusts up to 80 - 100 mph and had waves of 30 - 50 feet batter the shoreline.

I grew up in Hawaii, a 40 foot wave is not all that uncommon there, just uncommon for the Northeast area of the US.

1944

In 1944 is that the one that made a new opening inlet on Long Islands east end.
Be prepared for the worst it a 2 and could go up or down.
Charlie was suppose to go up to tamper and decided to turn into PUNTA GORDA and it was not pretty in 04 and 7 years later it cleaned up pretty good but I visited to see my house afterwards and it looked just like a war zone, people were homeless for long time and some never returned to rebuild.

40' offshore maybe... but I'd be planning on the storm surge rising the water 5' or more.

40' just doesn't sound right but I guess it depends on the bottom.

NC and VA should take some of the punch out of this, but the water will rise, and there will be some big gusts...

be safe, and prepare.

Don't confuse wave height with storm surge.

Storm surge is a rise in sea level...a "monster high tide" that pushes water inland, flooding land above normal sea level. 40' waves are just big waves that break on the beach and recede.

The storm surge up LI Sound could be a real issue. We've got a new moon and high tide at 11:30 with an expected landfall of 1pm. This will keep the water bottled up in the Sound. During Gloria in '85 the storm hit at low tide at that caused all kinds of problems.
During the nor'easter of '92 my village was under water and we had the national guard here for nearly 2 weeks. Hope we don't face this same scenario.

Storm surge

Do not underestimate storm surge. I know we keep bringing it up, but as previously posted, Katrina was a cat 3 when it hit the coast. Storm surge of over 20 hit the entire coast line from just east of New Orleans to Mobile Bay. Just about every bridge on I 10 was damaged or destroyed. At the Kiln, Ms. overpass on I 10, there is a sort of memorial, showing the high water mark. All you people be careful, and do not under estimate the power of mother nature.

Isobel flooded Annapolis in 2003.

You can read all about Isobel here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Isabel

The Chesapeake Bay is actually a very shallow estuary fed by some 50+ rivers. Isobel's winds pushing north pushed about 8 extra feet of water up the Bay, flooding downtown Annapolis. The historic Dock Street area where the Annapolis Boat Shows are held was under about 6' of water only 3 weeks before the sailboat show was due to open. I have photos of people kayaking on Dock Street! Believe it or not, by the time the sail show opened, you'd have had to know there was a flood to have any idea it had happened.

need to move - last minute!

keep my 30 on a mooring at 79th st boat basin. was now just informed that the marina is closing and all boats must be moved.

yes, liberty landing would have been great but now they're full. best all around would be to head north up the hudson, found one marina in croton (half moon) that can take me. eventhough safer the further north would much prefer something closer (after that need to go to shelter island to prepare the 25 and then get out of there). a lot to do!

I know that's illegal for a marina to do in Florida, might be here too not that it will do you much good before sunday...
