In a recent email, I said to someone "I'm not boatist" The reference was to a mistaken assumption that I sail a Catalina. Got me thinking about how some people like to jump all over MacGregor owners because the boat is considered "flimsy" or "not a real sailboat" etc or the riff between "production boats" (a.k.a. plastic bottles) and "real sailboats" (a.k.a. one offs).

So don't be boatist and just go sailing unless we are talking about stinkpots ... then you can be boatist. :beer::thumbup:

I tend to agree to a point. However, if someone is asking for advice or opinion on a particular type of boat should we offer an honest opinion? This is something that has come up and always rankles some people.

It's not the honesty of the opinion delivered that often matters in these cases, but the box in which it was packaged and sent.
Sometimes those "honest" opinions arrive COD and the price can be taxing :poke:

As Will alludes to, it is how the advice or opinion is stated, in those situations what is thought is often better not said. If some one asked if a Venture 22 is a good boat to circumnavigate with, we might ask which island in an inland lake would be circumnavigated. :biggrin:

Except in the case of project boats, tactfully identifying what the boat was designed for and whether it matches the buyer/owner's planned use is a polite way of addressing the issue. And then there is the old stand by phrase, "Well, that boat was built to a price."

We could also refer the questioner to Sailing Anarchy, where they would be quick to point out the boat is a 3 knot :poop:box.

I vote Marvel. Seriously, how much kryptonite fell to earth ... and couldn't the writers have come up with at least a few more realistic weaknesses?
