In my younger years

When I was doing work on main frames and circut boards, I was taught when doing wire connections to: With ring or open connecters to fold the wire back over the insulation, then put the connector on pushing the wire in until the wire end was visable. Crimped then a touch of solder to the connector and wire. Then the shrink tube. A pain in the ass for time but just about failure proof. The wire had good contact with the connector and solder. Shrink Tube Question

Maybe a dumb question but wouldn't the same sheath installed to keep moisture out keep moisture in. How do you detect a minor breech in the integrity of the seal and inspect the connection for corrosion at a later date.

Some heat shrink tubing is made for dry

installations and has no melting liner. The type you want for a boat has a melting compound on the inside so that when you heat the tube it melts the compound and shrinks the tubing at the same time. This type is used on submersible well water pumps many feet below the surface. Your wire connections should always be protected from mechanical injury with an enclosure. Further, connectors are never expected to sustain a physical load.
