New wheel for 86 Hunter 31?

I have an '86 Hunter 31 ("Valhalla"). It is equipped with a Merriman steering system and a 36" wheel. I would like to go to a smaller wheel, 28" - 30", since I don't need that leverage for river cruising. Is Merriman still around (I haven't hit a search engine yet)? Will Edson products mate to the existing shaft? All info appreciated!

Merriman is gone.

Jack: I would try to borrow a wheel before you invest in one. If you can find someone with an Islander or other boat from the 80's you should be able to get a feel if a smaller wheel is really a good idea.

28.5 Wheel

I have what I believe to be a Merriman 28 or 30" diameter wheel (original equipment on my 1986 Hunter 28.6) which I would be willing to trade if the hub and keyway fit. Contact me direct at stewartsauer@comcast.net. The boat and wheel are in Tolchester, Md.

1" SHAFT

Last season we traded wheels with a H 35.5, he wanted smaller I wanted bigger. As long as it is a 1" shaft you shuld be fine. He had allot of people wanting to trade for his bigger wheel. Cliff H 28.5 "Red Dog"
