Greg- if he was picked up 70 miles east of St Augustiine (east coast), why in the hell would they fly him to CLEARWATER, on the west coast of Fla???.

Apparently he's a strange dude, but has been through a LOT!

What an idiot,

If he died, he could have been a candidate for the annual Darwin Awards.
I hope the USCG gives him a big fat $$ bill & charges extra for "STUPIDITY".

I don't get the mindsets of those got to sea & their logic in many cases cause their deaths.
This was one lucky bastard. Well, at least he had a phone.

In addition, floating in a bubble trying to get to Bermuda, didn't he think about having a way to steer? I think he was disoriented before he set sail, I mean bubble.

Hey, that guy's nuts! Grab 'im!

Except for this little stunt, I kinda like the guy. Hangin' with counter-revolutionaries, eating during Ramadan daylight hours, etc...

Just,

If You think that's funny, one of my sailing buddies fought alongside Castro & they were good friends. When he finally saw what Castro was all about, they had a falling out & he was put in prison in Cuba.

His family in Spain were wealthy & it took them 2 years & alot of money to smuggle him out. Since that time, this guy has had an amazing life involved with many governments ,CIA & many other adventures I cannot talk about in public.

I keep after him to let me write his memoirs. So far, he doesn't care to but, I keep after him. But this "Bubble" idiot, not so much.

The coasties base in Clearwater dispatched the helo. It normally returns to its base, as it is equipped to handle debrief, med exam AND the Paperwork!

Yabut- that's a 110 mile flight, each way, plus the 140,miles out to where he was, so right at a 400 mile flight, round trip.

And Coast Guard Mayport is 35 miles from St Augustine? Just doesn't make sense. Of course, his stunt didn't either so why not :D:D

The USCG does not operate a taxi service. The aircraft is based at Air Station Clearwater and that is where they will take anyone rescued. A lot of tax payers consider people in small boat trying to cross oceans as reckless but the Coast Guard is there to assist so let's not pass judgment on the merits and cost of the rescue of this idiot. Let's be glad they are out there for all of us.

He wasted taxpayers monies and diverted the Coast Guard from their duties for his stunt. I wish the feds would bill him for that stunt. If they did and it was sizable, then another idiot might think otherwise. What if there was a real emergency and the Coast Guard could not have gotten to those in trouble and perished trying to rescue that fool?

unfortunately we cant't have it both ways they either charge for rescue of all or non at all...... that would be discrimination on the part of the government...while i agree with him being a fool this is still the united states and we still have the right to do things like this... even though it is far fetched and foolish...i am just glad that we have this available to us....look at how much it cost to do the bounty a couple of years ago which was as equally foolish even more so as he put 18 peoples lives at risk and the inquisition after the fact

Most people rescued by the USCG would be traveling in something designed for the purpose - like a boat for the sea. So at what point would a plastic bubble be considered to be suitable for crossing oceans?
I hope it was registered. If people want to make political or other statements then Joe public shouldn't foot the bill
