Brave man using varnish. It probably would not last a season here in the Mediterranean sun. A good quality teak oil is the answer for me.

To protect that beautiful finish, you might want to think about covers - protection from sun and birds. :)

Nice!

A high quality spar varnish has UV blockers added to it. Putting on enough coats should keep it in good shape all season long. At the end of the season, buff it with 220 grit paper by hand and add another two coats. It should do well for a very long time like that. I like teak oil for a bare wood texture, it also doesn't protect the wood from wear. Hand grips, wood decking, places like that are good for oil because it gives a better gripping surface, but bright varnish is prettier.
