New Ullman Jib and Main

I was given the go ahead to purchase both a 110 Hanked on Jib and a 2+2 loose footed Main with one reef, what a great wife as I was only looking at the Jib for this year.

Based on all the information made available through this forum I have decided to go with the Ullman sails. Is there any thing I should be aware of before placing the order.

Thanks, Richie

Personally, I would've purchased the full batten, loose footed main. If you're not a racer,(who seem to like the 2 + 2 mains now), a full batten sail will last longer, and is so easy to roll up on the boom for storage. Also, if you're purchasing through Catalina Direct, their Ullman full batten mains have jack-lines, so reefing is easy without having to install mast gates.

Just my opinion.....

Either way, you got a sweetie for a wife!

Order placed, now comes the 5-6 week wait. Full batten loose foot, thanks for the advise. Catalina Direct took the time to explain all the options. Yes wife is a sweetie. Not much of a sailor but may be coming around.

Richie50,

Good choice, plus I like dealing with the folks at Catalina Direct. They have been involved with supporting the C-22, and probably the longest supporters of the C-22 Association. Good choice to with the hanked on 110 jib. I don't have a genoa for my C-22. I just don't need the hassle of trying to see around it. Guys are surprised to find out how well the C-22 sails with a jib, (heck, it was designed for a jib), and how much more relaxing sailing can be with a jib.

Not too long ago I bought a new 135 genoa and a full battened, loose footed sails from Ullman through Catalina Direct. The only thing I would do differently is to have ordered a second reef. Especially with new sails, reefing is rarer — second reefing ever more so.

But every once in a while the wind picks up and gusts higher than usual while I am still out on the water. That is when I want that second reef!

I also found that the 135 genoa on a roller furler gives me good flexibility for light air and when it freshens while already out there.

I think you and I might be the only people here with double reefs. I could live with a single, but like you said, I'd miss the double every once in a while.

And the second reef works wonders on a nervous wife. ;)

My wife broke her ankle two years ago. Her "sure-footedness" has been reduced. Just another level of safety control for a few more dollars. We ain't kids anymore and are no longer the thrill seekers of our younger dreams. We simply want to sail safely even when that summer storm sneaks up on us.
