Here's a new product i saw in a magazine that should be of use to alot of us. I have no connection to it.

If you ever got to your boat or anywhere else and find you forgot the key to the padlock, here is a new lock. It is a padlock that you put your vehicle key in, turn it once, and it is set to the vehicle key. If you forgot to bring your vehicle key... well, then, shame on you. Check the site below to see if it will work with your vehicle make and model. There is NOT one for Subarus. You can do a retailer search also, but use a zip code. Prices start around $25 according to a magazine article.

Interesting idea but the price for convenience is if someone gets that one key they can steal your car and open whatever is locked with that lock(s). So they empty your boat of valuables into your car and drive away. Seems to be a solution looking for a problem.

I use combination locks. If you forget a 4 digit number than you got bigger problems.

The newer combination lock from big box store uses alpha characters. You can make a phase easier to remember. Just don't set it the same as the boat !!

I bought a hard tonneau cover for my pickup that uses the same principal. The first time you insert the key it recognizes the cut and sets the lock to the same pattern. Convenient.

agree... a combination lock with large font and is re-settable to different combination of letters or numbers... no need to remember keys or eyeglasses...

Doubt I really have a use for those around the boat myself, but those would be great for the storage boxes on my trailer, The doors to my enclosed trailer the stuff I have mounted to the rack on the truck, and anything I wanna lock in the bed of the truck. It sucks to have 15 different keys for a bunch of stuff that's all attached to the same vehicle.

I dunno how long they'll be around, what with all these fancy new laser cut keys, and key fobs with pushbutton start ignitions on the new cars. I have one on my Subaru. The key machine is so fancy and expensive, the dealer doesn't have one. They say there's one locksmith in the area who has the machine, and they have to get him to cut spare keys. Then there's the b---s--- chip embedded in the key. On my last car (a Mazda) I wanted an extra key to use while kayaking, just to put in my PFD. The dealer kept telling me it was like, $95, and they had to reprogram the chip. I said I didn't want a chip, I just wanted the key so I could get into the car. They didn't get it. For all their marketing of mountain biking and kayaking all that kind of stuff, Subaru doesn't get it either….

Lexus is like that too. One key has the lock unlock buttons, plus a security key, the other just has the security chip. If you lose the big daddy key you can't get a replacement even if you still have the backup key. So, before you lose the big key you have to buy a replacement, $160! Geez...

I've been sidetracked so have to ask...

...after your vehicle cost and inconvenience in the name of security went up, how much did your theft insurance deductible drop? :-D

However the majority of cars do still use somewhat normal keys. It's mainly the imports and luxury brands with all this silliness going on.

that reminded me of that 1965 Chevelle SS i bought off the show room floor when i was 19...it was loaded with everything but AC...wire spoke wheel covers,4 speed trany, hard top (no door post), bucket seats etc etc...when describing it to my dad... he replied.." hell son you could have bought a Ford model T and got everything that car has.....

I got a new uncut key with a chip for 12$ on eBay took it it homedepot to get it cut found info on line on how to program it

Import and silliness.... How about when the import car company goes bust....
$527.00 + 13%= $595.51 Canadian from the dealer my 04 Saab!
I can't justify it as I only paid $500+13%= $565 for the car!
I LOVE the car! (It's just a bit dirty in the picture...)
On the boats I use combination locks that the combination can be changed.
The combination on the boats in charter this year will change each week. It's very easy to do.
