The "anti knock" chemical TetraEthelLead was added to refined gasoline. Before the addition of TEL, gasoline was clear "white". TEL addition made "White Gasoline" a golden color, as do most modern day gasoline additives.
For obvious Lead discharge reasons, TEL was outlawed.
Gasoline has a much lower combustion point, but could be "hand compressed" and was WWII choice since your jeeps and tanks ran on the same fuel.
For recreational camping, Kerosene [Naphtha] has a greater Combustion point and less likely to spread a accidental spill fire.

PS: I couldn't think of the word "mantel" , but I remember my Dad telling me, don't shake that lantern to avoid breaking the mantels. The light is much much brighter from the White Gas lanterns.
