The "anti knock" chemical TetraEthelLead was added to refined gasoline. Before the addition of TEL, gasoline was clear "white". TEL addition made "White Gasoline" a golden color, as do most modern day gasoline additives.

For obvious Lead discharge reasons, TEL was outlawed.
Gasoline has a much lower combustion point, but could be "hand compressed" and was WWII choice since your jeeps and tanks ran on the same fuel.

For recreational camping, Kerosene [Naphtha] has a greater Combustion point and less likely to spread a accidental spill fire.;)
Jim...

PS: I couldn't think of the word "mantel" , but I remember my Dad telling me, don't shake that lantern to avoid breaking the mantels. The light is much much brighter from the White Gas lanterns.;)

PSS: We still use for ordering coffee... Regular or UnLeaded...

Acetone can be your friend. Just don’t let it get near the vinyl striping.
In fact, acetone and mineral spirits have very little in common in terms of chemistry and are almost never truly interchangeable. One is a paraffin, the other an aldehyde.

Naptha is a generic term used to describe a VERY broad range of petroleum products. It's kind of like saying "oil" and believing it is all as one. Mineral spirits are a subset of naptha, and mineral spirits have a range of product types, including stoddard solvent, which is in fact a range of products. There are similarities between the products mentioned in this thread, but they are not the same things. Try selling kerosine to a dry cleaner and telling him that it is stoddard solvent.

White gas and white spirit are dangerously different. Please do not suggest they are the same.

I would be very careful when using labels or MSDSs to infer product ingredients. The MSDS is not a spec sheet, only a legal declaration of hazardous characteristics and specific hazardous ingredients.

White denotes the absence of lead and has nothing to do with additives. I have formulated and tested additives. The golden color comes from the base gasoline. White gasoline also has a different boiling point range, volatility, and combustion characteristics that motor gasoline, which has evolved with the passage of time into something quite different.

No idea what you mean by combustion point (flash point?) or "hand compressed." Neither is a standard term.

Kerosene has a higher flash point. Kerosene is not a synonym for naptha.
