The transducer that came with the chartplotter I bought is a transom mounted unit. The instructions aren't real straight forward as to where the best placement on the transom is for a sailboat,any suggestions? anyone have the same type that they installed?

I would think that it would work about anywhere on the transom. A friend of mine mounted his transducer on his rudder blade. He mounted it on a track so that he can pull it out of the water when his boat is left on the mooring. This way the transducer doesn't collect barnacles. This pic was taken by me with permission from my friend Wayne who likes to think of himself as a "tinkerer." I've stolen many of his ideas through the years. I've also improved on some of them and I think that it irks him sometimes.
What I would do is just mount it temporarily on a piece of strapping attached to your stern pulpit and and take the boat out for a dry run. Change the position of it to get a good idea of where it performs best.
I ran into a friend of mine the other day who lives in Raynham who recently bought an O'Day 30 fin keel and he loves it. He keeps it on a slip at Swansee Marina.

It all depends on what type of transducer he has. The one on my friend Wayne's rudder is for speed through the water and it has a small paddle wheel. Wayne also has another transducer for depth and it shoots through the hull. He has it set up in the same way that you described.
