How about using a "come along" to bring up the chain and anchor. A hook on the chain end to fit the 5/8" links... the other end clipped to the mast....etc... or even a simple hand crank winch shackled to a couple of deck mounted padeyes. You'd have to reconnect the winch every 7-8 feet.... but then you wouldn't need a special gypsy to accommodate the chain...

Hope this isn't a re hash of one of your previous comments... I may have missed it.

.....which is the manual Simpson Lawrence (later Lewmar) 555 manual windless. I'd really like a manual. Here is a link to one installed in a situation pretty much like ours.

We have an upper locker like the one shown and then there is another at the head of the V-berth with access to it through the upper one (use one for one rode and the other for the other rode. The upper is hinged like this one one the Pearson. I might be able to get the windlass just ahead of most of the hinged locker lid and would cut it into 2 parts.

I think they would both work from what I've seen other do with the same boat and some of the other horizontal ones. I'd just as soon pickup a manual or second choice would be electric with manual backup option,

most sailboats dont have the power or the speed it takes to haul and anchor with a float and a ring.... and at the minimal speed/power we do have, it would take a fairly large fender to create enough resistance in the water to lift a 40lb anchor even if we got lots of slack in the rode and made a run for it....
