You have delegated a few boat units to spend on your pride and joy. You can’t get everything at once. So how do you decide what to splurge on? It sure would be nice to get new sails… but what about safety, comfort, longevity, gadgets? What's next on your list? (Discussion topic and quiz by Trevor MacLachlan)

Safety is my main concern

Because we do have fog here on the west coast, the next major item on my list is radar. There are other things like a bimini and running my halyards aft, but right now I feel radar is more important.

Buy list

When I bought my 1971 22' Venture sailboat two years ago my priorities were: 1. Make the boat safe. 2. Buy the things that would allow me to launch and retrieve the boat easily, quickly and safely (the new mast raising system and a new winch for the keel.) 3. Buy things that woule allow me to sail offshore (GPS, depth guage, install a jib down haul and a slab reefing for the main. Everything else I bought last and was to make the boat easier to sail and increase my enjoyment. Novelman

Funny you should ask..

I close on my new boat this Thursday and I have a lot of items I will be buying. The first items to get replaced are all the standing rigging. Even though I had the rig surveyed, and they say it looks good, I'm still replacing it. The second item is the roller furler. Kind of crazy to do the rigging but not the furler. Next I'll do wind, speed & depth meters then re-wire the mast then.... Who knows? I'm sure I'll spend another 10K above and beyond the purchase price but mostly on safety items first...

Raising the Mast

I think raising the mast so I can trailer my 22' Catalina is a priority to me.

Repairs

My boat budget is a little slim this year as my side business that funds it needed some equipment upgrades. I need to repair some canvass and my wind angle instrument at the masthead.

A teak & holly floor for my "mistress"

I've always liked the "class" of a boat with a full teak & holly sole. The teak & holly floor boards on my 1984 O'day 30 are nice - but I'd like the whole floor that way. When I saw a flooring material at the Plasteak booth at the boat show - I thought this product would be perfect. They make it from recycled "pop" bottles, and it looks great! I'm waiting now to see when they'll "get around" to me. Bill on STARGAZER

Anemometer

My big toy this year is a tack-tick anemometer. I charged the receiver and did the network setup this weekend - worked like a charm (at ground level! :) ) We splash on Friday and will take two days to sail her home this weekend, so it'll get a good workout right away! Dave

A Little more stuff

Well, my boat is new (to me, she is an '81). So the list of add ons is long. My "new" boat is a Catalina 27. I already purchased a used bimini and that needs to be installed. I also have purchased a small single burner propane stove so that needs to be installed. My next purchase might be a crusing spinnaker and related gear.

Goodies

Interesting topic I have had a 1978 Hunter 27 for a little over a year. I added a bimini, new sail cover, sail bag for the headsail and a new laminated tiller. I relaced the bow lights and the steaming light due to excessive corrosion. Just purchased a new main, A Raymarine fluxgate compass and a knotmeter/depthfinder. Next is a roller furling headsail (maybe next spring).

purchase

the first thing I bought for my C-22 when I owned it was a tiller autopilot. To make the 5 hour run to Catalina Island in a C-22 we had to leave Long Beach early, like before 7 in the AM, to avoid the headwinds and big chop that would come up later. It was a dead motor, and that autopilot freed me from the tyranny of the tiller.

Hey John with Hunter 27

I have a '77 Hunter 27. I have added a roller-furler (CDI), rewired both A/C and D/C, new main, and will install a new chartplotter/sounder next weekend. Let me know if you have questions I can help with. I would like to replace my bow lights as well. Do you know where to get them? Thanks.

I've already added a lot, but!

Since we bought our Tanzer 26 in 2002, we've made numerous additions for comfort and safety. Boat already had roller furling and basic safety equipment. Halyards were run to the cockpit. And PO had installed a Bukh diesel saildrive I replaced a damaged fire extinguisher and have added two more (and larger) ones. Smoke detector. New lifelines (stanchions and bases ungraded). Mustang inflateable PFD's with integral harness and tethers to go with them. New semi-balanced rudder (one of the best perfomrance enhancements I've ever made on a boat). New fully battened main (had Genoa recut for better sheeting angle and new luff tape) and installed reefing lines that run to the cockpit and lazy jacks. Replaced the head and holding tank (doubled the holding capacity to 24 gallons) and relocated the pump out fitting. New re-boarding ladder (6 foot single post design, as we dive from our boat). Bow platform, anchor roller and upgraded to a Bruce anchor. Navman fishfinder with log and Navman GPS chartplotter (small one with 5" diagonal screen and integrated antenna, a wonderful product for a smaller boat). Raymarine ST-4000 MkII autopilot. Masthead tri-light anchor light combo, with LED bulbs. LED interior lighting. Solar powered vent New two burner Force 10 propane stove (one of the latest additions, I hope to finish up the install this weekend). Additional insulation on the ice box. AM/FM/CD player. On the wish list. Masthead wind instruments (speed, direction). Leaning towards a Navman unit. Solar panel(s) and/or a wind generator (found a very small, simple 250 Watt wind unit that would be easy to install). Folding or feathering prop. Might replace the AM/FM/CD with a unit with external jack and plays MP3's Our longest trip to date was a round trip of 198NM over 11 days (didn't travel every day). Longest single day on the trip was just shy of 50NM with 5 nights spent at anchor.

Raytheon Auto Pilot

I just purchased an auto pilot for 27 Catalina with Wheel steering and can't use it, I can't decide on how to install the rudder sensor, unless I build a 2.5' box.

New mainsail and genoa!

Mine were 13 years old...pinholes and blown. I love the new main! It has more wind sensory stuff and controls, also I can flatten it more which in higher winds leads to leas heeling. Can't use the genoa yet, but it seems a little intimidating... My next purchase will be a traveler...once I get the "engine" purring than I will focus on comfort stuff!
