Steve, Doesn't part of the answer lie in what's inside where you drill the hole? Our old C22 (1981 #10469) didn't have a built-in compass, we used a brackt mount, but I remember that the starboard side had the galley and the port side had the dinette. Big head buster on port. Don't know what model you have. Also try the www.c22.org site for answers.

mine's on port

I put a Mini Contest bulkhead mount compass onto the port side of my C-22. The only reason I did this is the motor is on the port side and when moving along at night, it is a little easier to get close to the compass to read it and get at engine controls. However, when on a starboard tack, I wish I also had the same compass on the starboard side, as it is difficult to lean over to get a good reading. It would be nice to mount it amidships, perhaps in the bottom crib board, but that would be too close to the metal of the keel winch. If I were to do it all over again, I would get a GPS with a good compass reading feature and allow myself the freedom to mount it anywhere without having to worry about devation (not to mention variance).

Don't forget

Just in case you have stereo speakers mounted in any bulkheads, locate the compass away from them or you'll get false readings.

Starboard

My 1975 C22 came used to me with a bracket on the bulkhead on the starboard side. To keep it out of the way, we normally carry it forward in the cabin on a mount on the starboard bulkhead up forward ahead of the bench/galley. Someday I hope to need to use it in the cockpit as on some exotic cruise such as Galvanston to Tampa. I think starboard vrs port depends on space behind the compass, distance from steel and magnets, and possibly the ease to get lighted for night use.

dont drill

My compass is on the starboard side, but , here is a thought. When we sail someone is always leaning their back on the bulkhead, it gets quite uncomfortable, even with a cushion to lean on the compass for very long. I dont know where on a tiller boat a better mount may be, but maybe a hand held if your not sailing a lot of compass courses. we sail primarily line of sight. jeff.

compass mount

I have mounted my compass on a board cut down to fit exactly where the second hatch board normally would sit. The light is plugged in by a cigarette plug type extension to the battery. By itself it fits fine, when the weather gets miserable, it is easily visible and replaces the #2 hatch board and all are put in place to seal off the cabin. When not in use I store the compass inside the cabin out of the elements. (no temptation for thieves either)
