New Toilet Advise - Want to Get it Right

My 34 has an older Raritan Lectrasan (now called Electroscan) unit operating on sea water. Apart from replacing the electric grids once in 25 years it has been bulletproof.
Since seawater is the fluid, there is no need to add salt as in a fresh water lake. However, on a few occasions, in a marina or near a river outlet, a fresh water mix may see the salinity level drop below the required amount and the unit will automatically not allow flushing the toilet (it assumes you are not 3 miles offshore!). So even if you are diverted to the holding tank, it's won't operate.

A good unit.

Actually you have MORE ability to conserve flush water using the Momentary Control, because the Full Flush option in the Smart Panel, is two (or maybe even 3...I'd have to look it up, but I'll let you do that) big flushes. The momentary control puts you in complete control of the amount of flush water used.

if I plumb my Ericson 32-3 this way does the line from the sink drain to the head pump need a vacuum breaker?
Prob'ly not...but because it's installed between the pump and the bowl (at least that's where it's supposed to be), it has no impact on the intake plumbing, so why not just keep it? I learned years ago that it's hard to go wrong erring on the side of caution.

That shut-off has to be an add on because it's never been standard in the Lectra/San or ElectroScan--which, btw, is not just a new name for it...the ElectroScan controller has been completely redesigned.

It shouldn't be that hard to over-ride it...just keep some kosher salt in a Rubbermaid box with a 2 tablespoon coffee measure...add two coffee measures of the salt to each flush when needed.

I had read this in the description:
" Flush timing of initial fill, discharge and final fill are fully programmable from the control panel."

Thanks for clarifying that it is not a way to reduce the water used and I'm better off with what I have.

I devised my own seawater/freshwater change over on both my Elegance heads. It was much cheaper than the Raritan kit and just as easy to install. See it at Installing two electric toilets
I also fitted their Puritan waste systems which pretty much negates the need for a holding tank.

I'm pretty sure you're referring to the Raritan PuraSan Raritan PuraSan Promo Sheet

You'll find that you're forced to use a holding tank more often than you think because an increasing number of well-meaning but misinformed marinas are being hoodwinked by the enviro--zealots into requiring their use inside their waters.

After consulting with Peggie and feedback from the forum I purchased 2 Raritan Elegance standard (since they sit on a pedestal), straight back (since they butt up against a vertical bulkhead), freshwater (since the boat has plenty of water tankage capacity and is on shore water at the dock), 12v toilets with momentary control (since it does not require any programming and it mimics the controls on my other boat). Also purchasing new
Raritan Hose-saniflex sanitation hose for the project.

You’re right Peggy, my misspelling. I fitted two, one for each toilet, so now we have two independent loos. I haven’t yet met any marina who has even asked about whether we have a holding tank. or otherwise. There are also not that many Federal No Discharge Zones anyway, in my neck of the woods.
The Florida Keys is the only large area, and I can’t go there anyway because of my draft.

Photo of the first new freshwater Raritan Elegance toilet with momentary control installed in the aft head. It is quiet and the installation is clean without exposed hoses and pump like the old one on the left. Next steps are to replace the forward toilet and sanitation hose and install teak and ebony marine vinyl flooring on both toilet pedestals to match the remaining flooring.

I’m sitting here thinking. Can I drive down to California to give that a try?

Installed the momentary control just like the Jabsco control on the sailboat.

Did you get the Bluetooth enabled model? Could be good adolescent fun to flush while someone is contemplating too long. ;)
Shortly after Raritan introduced blue tooth flusher, someone suggested it could be great fun to use your cell phone to hack into a dock neighbor's blue tooth flusher and drive him crazy trying to find out why his toilet flushes periodically for no reason.

I installed a Raritan Elegance with fresh water flush. My Marlow Hunter has 2 40 Gallon tanks. We live aboard in the summer, and each water tank lasts about three days and we've been aboard a week and haven't pumped out yet. (45 gallon holding tank) We did use the Raritan Smart Control and it works as advertised. The installation was very straight forward.

Second raw water electric toilet replaced with a Raritan Elegance freshwater electric toilet yesterday. My wife and I are really happy the head toilet smell is gone, bowls are clean and they a relatively quiet. The boat is equipped with 250-gal on-board water supply and shore water supply and a 40-gal holding tank. Today I will insert 1.5" and 1.75" stainless steel caps onto the holes left by the former Jabsco toilet's water supply and discharge hoses (would not have these holes if the PO installed a Raritan Elegance toilet). On good outcome with this project is that I was able to locate the toilet's raw water thru hull valves, one under aft engine bay platform and the other one under the vanity cabinet base through a hand hole, which we created to get access to it.
