Kafka; To make yourself a really GOOD sailor, start with a dinghy. Spend a summer with a Sabot or even a Lido 14 or something similar. You'd be surprised the difference it makes.

ocean sailing

kafka: IMHO, I don't believe either of those boats would be a good choice for an ocean voyage: 1) You need room for supplies, equipment AND YOU 2) Small, light boats like the Hunter tend to be quite "tender", so they won't handle rough weather as well as a heavier boat (If you've ever been out in a storm on a Hunter 25, then you know what I mean!). Of course, stories abound about people who have sailed across oceans in micro-sized boats! I guess if your trying to prove something, then go for it! But if you want to be at least reasonably comfortable and safe, then I think you should look for a longer, wider, and more solid boat. Of course, that's just my opinion - I could be wrong! Check the link below for sailcalc where you can find specs and comparative info on hundreds of different designs. Good luck, and Happy Sailing! Every year . . .

or so, there is a post like this. Newbie sailor, wants to sail accross the ocean, needs advice on a boat. My advice is to gain enough sailing experience so that you know the answers to all the questions you have. If you still have to ask, then it means that you are not ready.

Get off to the right start. Find an ASA sailing school. You'll climb the learning curve faster and probably avoid a lot of mistakes and bad advice. Good luck.

Sure it Is

Drop it into Town Lake and sail her on down here. When you get here I'll buy you a beer and tell you where to stop along the way.

Watch the weather reports and look me up in the owner's directory and send me an email when you would like to spend a weekend sailing in the gulf when the wind is about 15 knots from the south for a day or two. The waves will range from 4-6' so it's not bad, but it will give you an idea on what type of boat you will need.

Take a class first!

I agree with MrEd. Take some ASA classes right away. It is an effective way to learn to sail safely. I'm in Corpus Christi, email me if you want some recommendations: jimcookk@msn.com Jim

The boats can make it

but you might not want to once you are out there. My advice is go out with someone experienced for a while and see what it is like. If you encounter some bad weather for a few days and vomit repeatedly for all of that time, you might loose the will to live. It really happens. I have seen it. Get some experience before you invest a bunch of money in a boat and plan something which may not suit you.

Coast Guard permit?

You need no permit from the CC to go solo or anything else. Just meet their equipment requirements and don't be drunk and you can pretty much sail where and how you want. Learn to sail first and then think about going off shore. Cruising a sailboat is a lot different than the photos in the magazines. Not all days are wonderful.
