I'm 19, just got out of high school, heading to college and i want to take up sailing.I have been on several sail boats all 35+ft. But to my question, I want a sail boat between 17 and 24 feet.I want something i can spend the night in.I also want something that is easy to tow, I am not opposed to an older fixer up.I want a reccomendation of a good boat that fits that description.brand,make,year.Something easy to learn on.It will be for large lake sailing. I have an instructer but no boat. Please e-mail me any information @ joel_dawson@hotmail.com. Thanks.

Catalina 22

My Brother in law (he is also 19) has a Catalina 22 (I don't know much about it but it does have a swing keel so it launches easily. He made just a few mods to single hand. Roomy enough for 2 below decks. Also, older ones are not too expensive either.

Keelboat

Buy a boat with a fixed or swing keel. Keelboats are not as tender (not as quick to heel) and point better than the newer water ballast boats. My vote is for the 85 Hunter 23. Easy to sail, easy to tow, not to expensive, very fast, and very roomy inside.

Macgregor 21 portland or
Venture 21

I have a venture 21 that we keep for towing to small lakes, and camping adventures. If you have a smaller (or older) car, these can make pretty nice boats. They are relatively light, launch easily and can be handled by one person. Setup and take down is easier with two, but I have done it myself without problem. The accommodations are small, but adequate for one or two people. We have slept a family of four on it. Although, it was not the most restful. The fellow who owned it before me towed it with a 4 cylinder Toyota. I use a 186,000 mile ford explorer, without problem. You should be able to pick one up, in nice shape, with sails, trailer, motor, for about $2500.00. It has a large cockpit that is very comfortable.
