Just got my first sailboat a 1984 MacGregor 25 in pretty good shape on a trailer. I am new to sailing though and need some info about the standing and running rigging. Where can I get diagrams for proper layout of the rigging for this boat. Any suggestions would be appreciated so I don't make any disasters... Thanks

This Site

Will help you for sure. I have been sasiling a long time, and I still have questions. The people here are great, and very knowledgable. I hope I can help by putting my two cents in where needed. Good luck.

Manual

There's another site, I believe It's macgregorsailors.com that you can download the owners manual from.

Not much for mac 25

The website mentioned is totally concentrated on Mac 26 models. You can glean some info from it, however. Older mac 25 owners are on their own pretty much. This website and forum is the best way to find info and advice.

Not a factory rig

Jacques, Although an easy to adjust backstay is great, it is not a factory set-up and was added somewhere along the way. The factory set-up uses the stainless tangs with the holes that you lever to tighten and then pin. The same as the side stays. Make sure to inspect all of your stays sor wear/damage. My starboard upper stay had six broken strands at the lower thimble. I'm replacing the upper and lowers on both sides for $174. The fore and back stays look fine but will be replaced soon as well. You will find any number of rigging modifications that can be done on the 25. Mainly, it is a matter of personal preference and cost that dictates what is done. I sail mine with the factory rig. It's not as efficient as it could be but I sail for fun and never really have any place that I need to be by a certain time. If I did I would have boat a, gag, power boat. I am thinking of running lines to the cockpit to make it easier to single-hand and I did just install sail slugs so who knows how long I'll stay with the original rigging. -John

Venture 25

I found a manual for the Venture 25, which Mac made as well. I think most of the rigging is about the same. I haven't yet looked at the winch for the keel system. Anything that I should pay particular attention too for this system ? thanks for all your replies.

Jib Sail

Just inspected my jib sail ... I have been studing several videos and my question is about the jib line to the clue . The videos I have studied show two line to the jib. They show when you do a tack that you throw one line off then take in the other line to adjust the jib to the new tack. Some of the pictures of the MacGregor show only one line to the jib. I can't imagine taking the line all the way around the mast to the opposite cleet so how do you tack with the jib ?

Was the jib

self tending?? I can see one line if the jib was tended by a boom. Other wise, I would think that it would be two lines headed back to the cockpit. I have two lines (sheet) running back to my cockpit to either use by hand or with the winch. Go with two. It is a better way to go.... I think.

Jib Sheeting

Use a sheet to port and starboard (2 Lines) You trim the sheet on the downwind side.... As you head up into the wind, Release the "working" sheet and reset the other side.... Similar when you jibe the sail but a bit more exciting..... See some of the online training for tacking and jibing.... The quicker you get the new sheet set, the less cranking on the winch you have to do....

Looks right from this angle.

I usually have to redomine, but I am left handed, and I always seem to get it wrong but I always check it before I head out. The way you check it, is to push the boom out, and see it if it hangs up anywhere or is hard to push out. If it is free you have it.

Where are you planning on sailing her?

Hey buzz, welcome to the mac 25!I have had my boat about a year now and I love it.Gregg has been very helpful mentoring me and my family on how to sail our boat.If you are planning on sailing your boat on monterey bay out of moss landing I would hope that you have someone to mentor you as well.I am sure there is lots of great info on this site ( I check it everyday)but nothing beats an experienced guy there in person to show you the rope(lines).

Thanks Jack!!

I hope that I have been at least some help. Many years of experience does help a little. By the way, I will not let my head get too big, as I need to stay ahead of you and Dave. I tend to check this everyday as well, but I will only really answer if I think I can help. Splash day is coming. Saturday May 12. I hope all goes well with yours. If you need any help, you know I am a phone call away. Good luck Buzz. Monterey can be a tricky place to sail. Not saying SF Bay is much easier, but there is some protection. Thanks for the kind words Jack.
