Catalina 22 Big Lake, Alaska
My wife and I are not owners of a Catalina, but we are trying to change. We are looking for a Catalina 22, but as we live in Alaska, we are having a hard time finding one. Basically, we will have to purchase our sailboat in the lower 48 and have it shipped to Anchorage. I anticipate that the markets we will be looking at are Seattle and Portland. As we cannot run out and see every Catalina 22 that comes up, are there any suggestions regarding years or key issues that we should be aware of? We are going to be placing a lot trust in the seller. Would like to know if there are certain years to avoid or questions specific to the Catalina 22 that need to be asked. Thanks.

Try posting this on the Catalina 22 Forum here at Sailboat Owners .com. There are a lot more C22 owners over there than on this forum.

The Catalina 22 has seen little change since it was introduced 1968. There is a Mark II version that made superficial changes; Pop top redesign, galley redesign. I sailed on early ones as an instructor in 1978. I owned one built in 1998. There is no 'bad batch' to look out for.

Balance the price with the year, condition, and the equipment provided and you can't go wrong.

Over the years, the hull, sail plan, rigging, etc.. remained the same. In the late 80's the deck and some other changes were made but one that stood out was the forward tinted lexan opening hatch. In addition, the wing keel version also came about in 1987 for model year 1988 I think. The boat was more of a traditional style. In 1992, the deck and interior was changed somewhat but the basic boat, sail plan, rigging, etc remained the same. Then the Sport 22 came out in the early 2000 era wieghig less but with no sails and being a plain jane boat. THis was being designed for racing with the owner deciding on the sails. The Sport was only offered in the swing keel version. However, Road King (Traillor's Sailors) located in NC and FL did redesign the trailer for easier launching. In fact, it will fit all the swing keel versions.

I am retired and not sure what is happenning now.
