New to a Genoa

I recently purchased an 1982 O'Day 23. It came with two sails...a mail and a genoa jib. The genoa is on a flexible furler. I.m not sure of the placement of the genoa on the furler. I know the jib sheets should be outside of the shrouds. Should the genoa jib itself be inside or outside of the lifeline when completely unfurled?

Outside

Barbara, it depends slightly on the size of the genoa, but most likely it's in the 130-150% range (which you can tell by how much sail extends back beyond the mast) and the genoa will definetly be outside the lifelines, and will probably ride slightly up and over them, depending on how the sailmaker has cut the sail...which is OK. Have fun. Don

What about jib sheets?

I understand running the Genoa sheet outside of the lifelines due to the size of the sail. What about a jib? I am running the sheets outside of the lifelines to a 18" jib track next to the cabin. It just dosen't look right and I'm chaffing the lifelines when tacking. Everyone tells me the sheets must go outside of the lifeline so I can let the jib out went sailing down wind.

Experiment

Jack, you mentioned running the sheets outside the lifelines is causing chade and doesn't look right. Have you tried running the sheets inside the lifelines? Try it, and see for yourself if you have trouble running off the wind. Experiment on your own to see what works. That's one of the fun things about sailing! Let us know how it works out. Best, Trevor

change the windward side

to an optional or curiosity setting then tack to it , if you are not happy tack back to the previous sheet angle. and change the wind ward back to the best of sets.. with my boat due to lline config. to truly beat i must (working jib)sheet to the inside of the lline stantion to get a un interrupted sail and a sheet running to the block only
