i need a new transmission shift cable. Does anyone have a source for a company that may make or will make a shift cable for me? My steering pedestal is a Merriman (out of business since 1989). I have the cable out of the boat. The engine end of the cable has failed. I am not sure where to look for such a part.

Teleflex/Morse Cables. Most any boat shop can provide these for you. It is best of you remove the old one and take it in with you.

Be sure to attach a fish line when removing the old cable to aid in reinstalling the new one.

The best Cable ever

About a month after I purchased my boat in Feb of 1999 the throttle cable broke.
After a month of learning how to take the pedestal apart I replaced that and the transmission shifting cable with two "easy glide" cables from the Edison Pedestal Company.
This was in 1999 (12 years ago) and they have worked very well ever since. I would not use any other nor recommend any other.

Some of those Merriman/YS pedestals use special cables with oversized ends. I found this out the hard way a couple of boats ago.

BUT, it turns out that even though Edson bought the product line and killed it, they stock (or did a while ago) those special cables. If you cable doesn't conform to standard types, try calling them.

If you can't do a direct replacement, take a bunch of pictures and we can help you out with some recommendations on how to modify the ends to make it work. By all means try to find the part that fits how it is now. But all is not lost if you can't find it.

I ordered the new cable after I spoke directly to a parts person who seemed very knowledgeable about marine control cables. He assured me that the cable would be an exact match. The OEM cable is much too heavy duty for the application but I am replacing it exactly as originally installed on the boat. I ordered a series 43BC control cable. Hopefully this will be a simple fix.

A lesson learned is to take action when a control cable starts getting difficult to operate. My shifter hung in forward gear while I was in the docking process at our slip. I shutdown the engine about 100 feet from the slip and was able to pick up a spring line we keep rigged in slip to stop the forward motion as we entered the slip.

I post the results of the new control cable.
