New sheets for the Traveler

Curious about proper working load and diameter. I won't be back to the boat for awhile for a measurement and the old sheets are too short for my liking anyway.
I'd prefer to have the sheets long enough to reach the helm. How much should I order per side roughly?

Guido was very helpful...but now I can't remember if my rig is 4 or 5 to 1 :banghead:Guess I'll have to make a trip out to the yard.

Control lines. Sheets go on sails.

Another question is what sort of line. Dyneema is a mistake; very rough jibes. Polyester is common place. Nylon, specifically climbing rope, is gaining a following, since the jibe is cushioned. I got the idea from a Starzinger after having realized Dyneema was a huge mistake. Love it. This is NOT a place where low stretch lines is better.

Are you telling us you have no pictures of your boat that you can look at? I can't imagine any boat owner in existence that doesn't have a box or file full of pictures of his precious boat that he can bore friends and family with every chance he gets.

I just bought it so haven't deleted all the photos of the kid to make room on my phone quite yet. hah
I like the climbing rope idea...that's more my wheel house after more than 10 years as a professional mountaineering guide. I actually have some 8.5m kicking around the house somewhere. However, you're still likely only going to get minimal "stretch" in a dynamic climbing rope. Modern climbing ropes are more dynamic the more of it is in use. Example with only 10' under load there is less dynamics in play than there would be with say 40' under load.

Are we talking about jib sheets here, or the mainsheet??? Seems like the OP was asking about jib sheets, but then then the discussion suddenly switched to the main with 4 or 5:1 ratio....
Maybe I just misunderstood. Anyway, a while back, I switched to climbing rope for the mainsheet on my Cat27 (previous boat). I did it out of financial limitations more than looking for a rope with good stretch to it. Had a mint condition rope sitting in storage for a few years - since becoming a parent, there wasn't a lot of mountaineering going on....
My observations were that 1. The climbing rope was quite affected by UV, and 'looked' pretty tired after a couple of years. I don't really know if the integrity was affected as much as the appearance though. 2. The one accidental jibe that happened didn't really 'sound' any less traumatic on the rig! But again, no science to back that up. Either way, I do still like the idea of using it on the mainsheet...because the THEORY certainly sounds good.

But - to answer the OP's original question - my 30 is a mkI, and the original documentation states that the boat came with 40' per side of 7/16 dacron line for the jib sheets.

I miss spoke and said sheets and meant control lines on the traveler.
I went with Buccaneer Double Braid Traveler Line Kit 5/16, 35'.

PICS!
The one change I made to my traveler was to add eyestraps to the cam cleats One would think all travelers were set up this way, but mine was not. Makes handling the traveler significantly easier!

I got New England FlightLine rope for my Garhauer traveler. It goes flat if you step on it, but rebounds quick enough. It's only been one season, so I don't know about durability.

Depends on your intended use. I have jib sheets for racing that have almost no stretch. Same with all the Halyards, traveler, fine tune, vang, preventer, and back stay. For cruising I used older lines that if they stretch, I don't care.

Jib sheets are usually 1.5 times the length of the boat. My traveller is in the cockpit with 4:1 ratio and 60' long. My fine tune is 3:1. Gives me 12:1 when I need a very small adjustment.

True (over 30 years on rock and ice), but you only need 2-3 inches of give to take the sting out of a rough jibe. And you only want it to give when there is a good whack. Hey, if you've got the old line--and old climbers always have way more old ropes than they need--try it.

I use low-stretch every where except the traveler. That's the only one where you can get scary impact (and it allows faster jibes for the racer!), and it does not ease the traveler more than a fraction of an inch under normal windward loads. Just severe impacts.

Curious where you put the eyestraps? I can't visualize how they'd be used with a traveler?

They look like this. There's another thread here somewhere with more info. Neither of my cam cleats were strapped, so when you uncleated them you had to waste time getting the line back over the cams. As I mentioned in the other thread, MOST of the other setups on my dock had the straps on their travelers. The others probably don't know there's a better way.

I don't understand. Why do the traveler lines run around the outside of the block rivets instead of going directly around the sheaves inside of the support rivets?
