Time to get new sails for the '93 H23.5 I bought three years ago. My main is as soft as a bed sheet and my roller furling jib's stitching is beginning to fray and show the effects of the sun. Besides, they are no longer white, but a light shade of grey. I don't race, so I have put up with them thus far. Having never been in the sail market before, does anyone know of a good but economical loft? What are the traps I should be aware of as I talk to a loft? Thanks, Scott

I used Fx

got to fxsails.com. They are just as good as the big name brand and can help you choose the perfect sail for your needs! I tryed to buy the more expensive cut sail but they even asked what i needed it for and told me unless i was racing across the ocean in my 23 then i wouldnt need it, unless i liked throwing away money!! Great loft, great prices, get costumer service! A+++

Sails

I bought a main last year and a jib this year and I am tickled pink with both the service and product from Far East Sails, they want half down, and the balance when its shipped, and they are great to deal with. The bat any us sailmakers price by a long shot, and Practical sailor ratedthem #1 last year (I think)

the best loft is a local loft

A suit of sails should be custom designed for type of sailing you do and for the conditions you'll be sailing in. I would never buy sails from someone who hasn't personally visited my boat to take measurements, or who doesn't understand exactly what performance issues are important to me. Further, I want someone from the loft to be present when the sails are hanked on for the first time in order to make certain that the cut and fit is perfect. Off-the-rack sails are going to fit your rig worse than an off-the-rack suit will fit your body. This is not the place to save a couple hundred bucks, especially this time of year when your local loft is probably offering a discount for immediate orders.

Local Sailmaker

You could take the sail dimensions or bring your present sails to a local loft; talk about how you use the boat; cruising vs racing; loose footed main or bolt rope; type of battens, size of mainsail roach; material durability vs weight; headsail size and material options; what wind speed you typically sail in, when you need to reef, etc. If you are interested in max performance; have a bendy mast and a backstay adjuster, etc. the sail maker should also take measurements off the rig. Of course you could order from an off-shore loft; hope their standard sails fit your boat and your needs perfectly and and maybe save $2-300.
