New Sails

I have a 88' H23 with original sails. I just bought the boat this spring knowing I'd be lucky to make it through this season without replacement. Well, I made it till the end of summer but last weekend I noticed some tearing along a seam on my jib. I have a few questions about the new sails I should buy and where to get them. 1. Is a 135% genoa a good choice. I have roller furling. 2.One reef or two? Does anyone have a main with two reef points? 3. Who has good quality sails at a good price? Steve

Have that

I have a H23 with a 135 gennoa on a CDI roller furler. This year we left the CDI off and used the hanked on working jib. I think I like the smaller sail better. This is such a good light air boat we rarely noted the need for more head sail. (We do not race) The 135 was frequently too much and the CDI does not furl the sail nice enoug h to use it reefed. (We had the hanked on sail refitted to the roller furler) Next year I plan to have the working jib remade to fit the roller furler but will probably not use it reefed, just for the convenience of thr furler. Our main has one reef. We clearly would like two. The weather helm is severe and we'd like to carry less main/more jib much of the time. Presently we douse the jib around 15 knots. The boat sails poorly with main alone except on a broad reach.

Sailmaker makes the 135 shapely!

A good sailmaker can design/make a 135 hold a good shape when furled to reduce the headsail area. This sailmaker also said that he couldn't make a 150 shape well except when fully extended. I think they use some type of foam material in the luff. Never had one but hope to have a 135 with CDI flexable furler by 2001. Tim Witt

For Gary

Hi Gary, I don't remember the sailmaker but it was a major one. It was at the Annapolis show last year. If it is a normal thing to do and it really works correctly then all makers should know about it. I don't expect the shape would be correct when rolled to less than 100% but thats just speculation on my part. Tim Witt n4imd@att.net

135%

Steve: Hi! I would recommend a 135% headsail and 2 reefs on the main. When I replaced my head sail I had a 145% head sail built and it is more power than I need above 10 knots (goes great in light air though). I commissioned Sabre Sails in Fort Walton Beach FL to build the sails and they did an excellent job. If you choose Sabre Sails they will send you a measuring kit with instructions and a video to make sure you get the measurements correct. Ask for Rick Zern. Number is 850.244-0001 or www.sabresails.com My email address has changed if you want more information Scott_Wells@csicontrols.com Good Luck

What is an average cost for the sails?

Hi, I've been wondering, what is a ballpark cost of the main and jib for the H23'? I don't think I need new sails yet, but I've been curious to know how much it would cost if I really tore one up.... Thanks!

Chris E-mail me at cliffr@bright.net and we can talk about what your plans are. I used to race the 23 and sell UK sails in the dry dock season for somthing to do. Cliff
