Hey folks! It's been awhile for me, but I am interested in your collective opinions.

My 1999 C-310 is still sporting the original sails. They are adequate, but tired. The genoa is starting to fray, and I suspect will need replacing soon. I am thinking of springing for a new set - main and 135 genoa. I have tried used sails. Luck has been 50/50 I bought 2, and one is still OK, but not stellar. The other blew out pretty quickly. I do race the occasional PHRF race (4-5 times a year),and my performance is pretty dismal. Recognizing my skills are decidedly intermediate, and by NO means expert, I still think new sails are in order.

I have requested a couple quotes, and am headed to the Boat Show in Seattle on Friday, but wonder what this forum's thoughts, recommendations, and inputs are?

ANYTHING is fair game here. Chime in! I think it could be a good thread.

Go for new ones

Jon, FWIW, I have been reasonably happy with the factory sails (wonder where you go to get these?) which is probably what you have. There are some around for $12-1300. Anyone have any experience with any of these?

http://nationalsail.com/mcart/index.cgi?code=3&cat=22 Main $1295, 135% $1075 using the listed 320 prices as a guide. That is before options.

http://www.thesailstore.com/catalina-sails-c-39_160.html?osCsid=765fd1550e40267724fce0756a3c9b8f 135% $1639, Main $1479.

Here on SBO Main $1656, 100% Furling $1403. These are Doyle.

Here was my quote from National, seems reasonable, Maine swears by them.
Thank you for your inquiry regarding new sails for your Catalina 310 (I = 42.75, J = 11.75, P = 37.25, E = 13). Based on these rig dimensions, pricing is as follows:

Mast furling mainsail - 7oz dacron, Sunbrella UV on clew (choice of color), 50mm clew block installed, luff tape to suit existing furling system - $1,290

135% roller furling genoa - 7oz dacron, Sunbrella UV protection on leech and clew (choice of color), luff tape to suit existing furling system - $1,379

Sail comes standard with leech line with clam cleats, tell tales, flo-stripes and sail bags. Construction includes triple-stitched seams, large corner reinforcements, with handsewn leather chafe protection.

Current delivery time is 3 to 5 weeks from confirmation of order.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you would like to discuss further details.

Good sailing,

Jon: Let me throw out an alternative to new sails. Take a look at SailCare in Pennsylvania - google them. After 8 years I sent my sails (regular main and 150) for cleaning and repairs. They do great work and are easy to work with. The sails come back looking like new and even sound new (they put resin or sizing or whatever back on the sails) Total cost for cleaning, minor repairs and new Sunbrella on the genny and shipping was about $1,400.

Still shopping, but getting some interesting numbers. The best all around number is from North Direct, and the National Sails number provided by Witzend is super attractive. However, a local racing/cruising sailmaker, who will come to the boat before and after, and is just a little more than North is my current favorite. I am leaning strongly toward going with him for the additional local service. Still processing data though.

Can you explain best all around?

Are you saying North Direct is the best price? Can you say how "best all around" it is?

Almost $500 cheaper, but it does not include:
- Dutchman
- Full length battens (only one)
- Local support

More to follow.

It would seem like adding the grommets for the Dutchman would be a simple matter, as well as sewing on the pockets for the battens.

Ullman Sails

FWIW, I was on the CatalinaDirect site last night poking around and they stated the factory sails are Ullman Sails. They also have a place where you can request a quote.

Sailmaker came on Saturday. Took lots of measurements and we decided on a loose-footed main (will still have Dutchman), and a new 135 with foam in the luff to allow a decent 110% rollup. 5 weeks ETA. Can't wait!
