Hi,
Anyone have any advice for a new sailor? I'm retiring from 25 years in the Army and my (new to me) 82 MacGregor 25 will be the best stress management tool I can think of.

Advice tip#1-Read this site regularly. If you have a question or wonder about something search the Archives. Plenty of knowledge based here.

I would like to thank you for your service to our fine country. Let the boating questions fly, there are a great bunch of boating minds at your service here.
Thanks again, Mike in NC

I would like to say Thank you too for your service. Where are you going to be sailing the Mac25? Find a local sailing club. If you never sailed, then have someone check the rigging to make sure it is good and help crew the boat. That way you can learn to sail and not get stressed.

No sweat... alot of great guys/gals will continue to make serious sacrifices for the rest of us. But we appreciate the appreciation.

I'm hoping to sail quietly while my 14 yr old (son) fishes quietly on the Chesapeake. I'll have a line in the water, but I hope the fish don't bother me :)

Question #1- I'm buying a 1982 MacGregor 25 from a guy in Baltimore. What do I look for - besides the obvious cannon-sized hole in the bow- to ensure the boat is in generally good condition?

Is there a list of items and notes for standards?

Welcome aboard

Hi Carter
You are going to love sailing. As an Army dude myself I know what you mean about "stressin" I'm on the Bay too, down at Harrington Bay south of Annapolis about 20 nm.
My advice to you in purchasing a boat is get an inspector after you find a boat you like. He will go over lots of stuff like the electrical, engine, rigging, hull, plumbing,....... too much to mention here. It is money well spent till you get your sea legs.
Where are you going to call home port.

My girl friend MAKES me go out at least every other weekend:dance:. Perhaps we can raft up some weekend and exchange war stories.

Houha, oheee, Airborne all the way!

I have the same boat. It should be a Macgregor 25, the V25 is an earlier model.
Things that needed attention on mine when I bought it was the trailer tongue. It looked ok from the outside but all that was left on the side was rust and paint. I was able to poke out a 2'' hole the whole length of the tongue.
Check the tires, even if they look new the sidewalls crack over time.
As posted earlier check the wires. Especially at the spreaders and fasteners, replace if filaments are broken.
Check the keel for corrosion.
Check the keel winch and cable. Spray winch with lubricant, if it doesn't click when raising the keel pr lock when lowering, replace it. Check Dutton winches at their website not expesive and may prevent a broken hand.
Check all through hole fittings. They are made of plastic and my look okay but they become brittle over time.
Check gas lines and tank for leaks and cracks.
Check all blocks for broken or cracked sheeves
Check halyards for wear.
Make sure that your radio works. Check the antenna connections for corrosion at the mast base.
Look for sponginess on the deck, although I haven't seen any complaints about Macgregors in past postings.
Check and replace motor mount hinge screws. Make sure they are snug enough to prevent them from flexing.
I replaced all of my Perko plugs with the screw connector type, including the battery charger cord connection on the transom.

What extras did your boat come with?

What kind of motor did you get?

Re: Welcome aboard

HOOOOAH!!!!
I spent the first 10 years of my Army life with my knees in the breeze!!! (Jumping out of perfectly good airplanes).
I'll be settling down in Stafford Va, but probably floating out of Quantico. I need a job-

Anyone know of jobs in DoD- reference Foreign Policy or nation building? (My specialty).

Thanks for the notes.

Might want to step that up to at least an 8hp, in case of wind.
