I'm a relatively new sailor (1.5 years experiance) and I would like to purchase a new sailboat. I'm particularly interested in the O'Day 20 and 22 models, but I don't know if these will be well suited to my interests. I'm interested in taking my family (Mother, Father, older brothers) out on simple day-sails on the Thames and Mystic Rivers in Connecticut. I'm in my teen years and would also like to handle my boat solo. Are either of these boats good for my purpose and if not does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should consider?

Frank, For day sails, even if you aren't taking everyone at once, the 22 is a great bet. The cockpit is large, there is room below if someone needs to use the porta-potti, and the performance is lively enough to be fun in almost any except the worst weather. She is easy to single-hand, as well. Also, they don't cost an arm and a leg to maintain. Good luck. Bill C. O22 Closure, O28 Opua

Either one

Frank - Both boats are great. Perfect for daysails with the ability to camp or let someone use the head in privacy. Either one will start to get crowed with more than four people aboard. I'm sure there are stories of bringing many more, but there is a limit at which it gets hard to work the boat. I seem to see more 22's than 20's around here, so you might be able to get a 22 for a similar price given the market. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

O'day 20

Hi Frank- The O'Day 20 is a great small/mid sized boat. I didn't own one, but my cousin did and I enjoyed sailing it with him. If you're looking at 22's however, I owned a Catalina 22 and, having experienced both, would prefer that design over the O'Day. It's roomier and has a better layout. O'Day owners, please don't yell at me - I currently have a 272 which I've been absolutely enjoying for 15 seasons now. I'm just giving my honest opinion.

Can you wait until September?

Frank, I'm selling my ODay Javelin (16ft) in September in order to move up in models. Its a great daysailor that holds 4 adults very well, or two adults 4 kids. The boat is now in need of a mast, but I'm looking for one as we speak. The boat itself is equiped for competitive racing both with or without a crew. David
