Have a Hunter 30 1979 and I blew out my head sail. They are the original sails so I'm asking if I should have them restiched or buy new. I boat in the Sandusky Bay area, who repairs or the best place to buy new. I use hank on head sail. Thanks for anyones help!

Sails

Sails that old deserve to be retired. Buy new ! I would expect both sails need replacing. You won't be sorry.

Plenty of options

Hi Kim - Those 1979 sails would not be worth spending any money on whatsoever. There are used sail outlets where you can find sails with some life in them but if you buy new sails you won't regret it. You won't get overpowered as quickly with a sail that doesn't bag out and the performance difference can be remarkable. There are many, many lofts to choose from but you might start here at the chandlery and get a quote from Doyle/Super Sailmakers. See related link below. Have fun! Trevor

Shop for exactly the same sail.

Kim: If/when you start shopping for sails be sure that you are getting quotes for exactly the same sail, (same hardware, windows, telltales, cloth, thread etc.). DO NOT assume that you are receiving the same sail if you get a low price. They are probably shorting you on something. If you get a sail from the HOW site, you will have someone to speak with if you have a problem. I am not sure that is the case when they are in Hong Kong <g>!

sails for H-30 - 1979

Kim -- I have some sails from my H- 30 which was destroyed last year. I believe there is a Main and a 100% hank on jib. Also a 140% Genny hank-on. Let me know if you are interested. Henry

Depends on what you want to do with them

I have been looking and pricing out sails for my H27. I have gotten prices from Doyle, Lee, and a local loft. They have all been in the same ball park. I also looked at The Sail Warehouse online. Their Off Shore line is priced about the same as the other lofts but their OEM and Coastal Crusing lines are less expensive. I am not sure on the quality and would be interested to know if anyone else has had experience with them.

How Bad did you blow it out?

For $25 you can buy "The sailmakers apprentice". I knew nada about fixing sails but the one that I blew out in a thunderstorme 3 years ago is still going strong. If I remember right it cost me about $15 in materials and around 25 for the sail palm, needles and thread. Took about 3 hours while I watched TV. Gota be better than buying a new one AND you have a skill should you go out on the ocean and have a boo boo.

Sail Warehouse

We bought both our main and our roller 130 genoa from the Sail warehouse. We were very happy with every aspect of the deal. Chances are we will probably get our next main from them.

keep in mind...

A couple of things to keep in mind- Some of the big companies have "off brands"- cruising direct is a division of North Sails, tough to go wrong with something like that. Going with a local loft (north, doyle, quantum, UK/halsey) will get you top notch customer service along with your new sail. Just something to keep in the back of your head. Good Luck :) , Bill

All of my sails would have failed by

now were it not for several timely repairs. If it was a seam that failed simply restitch it. If it was the fabric that failed then it may be time to replace it. I think that the jib that I use most has been sewn over so many times that there may not be an original stitch in it.
