New Sailboat Shipping Cost?

Catalina 309 #168 kentucky lake
I am going to buy a new in stock Catalina 309 tomorrow is all works out, however, when I punch in the zip code for shipping on the "YACHTWORLD" web site calculator for this boat it comes with $1,480.49.

The Dealer is telling me $3500 to ship and $2000 to demast and remast at my location, so, is the delivery calculator accurate or is the dealer squezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzing me for more money.

The delivery is between 800-900 miles.

typically the dealer has to commission a new boat for which a $3500 bill is cheap - is the price you mention just shipping and if so, where is the commissioning charge?

I doubt that anyone could ship a boat for less than $2/mile unless they have another load going in the opposite direction for less than $2/mile.

We had a boat shipped from Stockton Mo. to Stockton, Ca. 3 years ago and we paid $6,000 for a 2,000 mile trip. Once the boat was at it delivery location the TOTAL charges to step the mast, install wind instrument and wiring, bottom paint was about $1,800.

You need to be sure that the delivery trip is insured from some guaranteed source and that the trucker is also bonded & insured.

I would guess that delivers are more in the $3-4/mi range these days.

i have a friend in the boat shipping business and they typicaly charge $3.00 a mile to haul it from point "a" to point "b".....

For example, the mast up and re-rig probably includes a rig tune, which might be closer to a $1000 than you think if you paid out of pocket. When I looked into dropping my mast marina prices were $200-300 each way (up and down) and a full rig tune and checking out the boat after the move at your site is probably worth $500 easy.

Don't know about shipping costs, but I'd expect more than a mast restepping for $1500. There's a couple of threads on the 309 Group forum on this site that discuss rig tuning on the 309, which you can do yourself with some time and patience to save a few bucks. On the other hand, I'd want to be sure a new (to me) boat was properly set up when I took delivery.

Just a wild guess, but I think the $1400 is JUST the shipping - you need to pull the mast down, prep the boat, get it on the truck, then reverse the procedure at the other end. That's a LARGE portion of the overall cost of shipping a boat.

I would not trust this amount to be accurate for any boat on Yachtworld, it is a come-on, not based on any real world number. Kind of like the "financing" tab, it pulls info from the web, that will be the cheapest, least inclusive, and may not even be a yacht mover/rigger..

Your dealer is likely much more accurate for this type of move.

I would speak to some reputable boat movers, else you may get an expensive surprise AFTER you buy the boat.

It cost more than that to get from Brewers Glen Cove to Commack 35 miles away :)

Brewers to step mast and secure for shiping, wash bottom and place on truck was 900 dollars + 400 for the truck

Its a TON of work just taking off and on the standing rigging/runing rigging so the mast/boat does not get dammage

Well, you certainly could try to negotiate that, but them may imply that a DIY rig tuning impacts your warranty.

The numbers your dealer gave you sound about right both for trucking and rigging/derigging. As mentioned, it's not as simple as pulling the mast and throwing it on the truck. Spreaders, boom, standing rigging, running rigging, furler ect....all have to be broken down and packed carefully so they don't get damaged.

I once was interested in possibly buying a boat that was located on a lake in the southeast. Much to my surprize, I found that there was no facility on the lake to have a boat hauled out -- or in. Boaters at this lake had to arrange for a special truck/crane to come from one of the marinas on the east coast to have their boats hauled or put in. This added quite a bit to the overall cost. Is this the situation at your Kentucky Lake?

Many lakes in VA and NC, depending on the size and draught of the boat will require cranes and hydraulic trailers. Is the case on Smith Mtn and Claytor Lake in VA...used to be, not sure, the same on Buggs Island and Lake Norman in NC...I know 10 years ago you had to have a crane on Lake Norman to haul and paint a 36'...

Then the trailers and access for them can be a chore as well...

Transportation of a boat not in navigable waters can be very expensive. I sure would be leery of prices Ushipit and the like offer..
