I am looking to purchase a new mainsail for my 322 oday. I cruise the Long Island Sound and race once a week. Not knowing much about sails, could anyone suggest what type of sail would be good? (cross cut, full radius, etc.) and how many battens? Thanks!

Talk with the sail lofts.

Mike: I would suggest that you talk with the sail lofts. Get their recommendations for your location and the type of sailing that you do. If you speak with 3 or 4 lofts and get some budget numbers you will have a much better idea on the preferred materials and sail configurations.

Sail Warehouse

I just threw out the Sale Warehouse catalog this morning that came with this month's issue of Cruising World. I know that they carry stock sails for many common boats and the 322 may well be one. Check there, unless your looking for something really fast and serious, in which case I would find a major name dealer- like North or Quantum, etc. in your area. Where is Sea Cliff and what is your bow (body of water)?

From What I See In SoCal

Most of the guys who race PHRF in cruiser/racer types like yours run a cross-cut dacron mainsail with good fabric, one full batten at the top and several long partials. They usually run a mylar radial cut jib. I ran yours on this site and the price was $1620 for a Doyle with one reef point, one full batten and loose-footed. Why don't you give the folks at the Chandlery here on this site a call or e-mail and kick it around with them? Rick D.

Everyone will have an

opinion on what type of mainsail to buy -- and none of them would be wrong -- for that person. Buying a new mainsail is a big deal (at least for me). You'll need to think about how you sail (seems like you race and cruise so you'll need to compare longevity vs performance), what material and cut will optimize that for you -- and what you want to spend. Like others here have suggested, I too would suggest thinking about all of this and then go spend some time with some quality sailmakers, of which there are many in your area. Any sailmaker worth his salt will be glad to discuss the many pros/cons and tradeoffs of all the possible variations one can order in a new main. And the bonus is that you'll learn a lot in the process.... Buying a new main is a fun chore.

Local Loft

Hello, Last year I bought new sails for my 1986 Newport 28. I got quotes from a bunch of mail order places, and I spoke to three local lofts - UK Halsey, Doyle, and North. Two of the local lofts provided nicely detailed quotes. These two also spoke to me for about 30 minutes asking why I wanted new sails, what kind of sailing I did, what my budget was, etc. I ended up with UK Halsey sails - a Dacron main with 1 full length batten and the rest partials. I would give Tom Nye a call at UK and speak to him. Also, Mark Washeim at Doyle was very very nice too. Good luck, Barry

Local Loft - Measure the Rig

You will get the best fit and probably the best service from a local sailmaler who will ask questions on how you use the boat and hopefully measure the actual rig. That may be more important on the double spreader B&R hunter rigs than your O'day but getting it wrong makes a big difference for a long time.

Go local

I bought new sails from North Sails in Huntington 2 years ago and have been very happy with both the sails and service. I second going local for the best service. The North guys came to my boat and spent a good 2 hours measuring, and my boat is just the stock C30. When the sails were ready they came back amd put them on. There was a problem with the fit of the jib which they took back and a week later were back and put it on. Then we went for a sail and they fine tuned. All this for standard cruising sails. I have freinds who race and have high performace sails from them and are equally as impressed with the service.
