I'm planning on purchasing new sails shortly for '79 h33. Rolly Tasker seems to have the best pricing. Has anyone had any experience with this company? Also, most sail companies are recommending two full battens on the upper section of the mainsail and two partial on the lower section for all around sail shape. I thought I wanted a full battened main. What are your recommendations? Thanks everyone.

Full Batten

I went with Air Sails from Sailnet and was happy. I too ran into the recommendation of full battens on top and partials below. I went with it since they were the sailmakers. I think I wish I went full battens the whole way. Sure like the looks of the sail and the added weight aloft can't be that much different and I doubt if it would make it much harder to raise the sail. Unless someone has real good reason not too, I'd go for full battens.

New Sail Purchase

I purchased two sails from the Sail Warehouse for my 79 30' Hunter. Both were Rolly Tasker sails. I purchased a full batten main and was very happy with it. Both the main and the 135 Genoa were both excellent quality.

Anyone know why they recommend only two

full battons? Maybe it's a shipping thing? Sure love my four fulls,,,

Pros and cons

According to the sail makers, the full battens on the lower half of the sail aren't as effective as the two up top, and come with a few issues. The issues include possible backstay coinflicts (although not on newer Hunters, obviously), flaking hassle, and the need for batt cars if the sails twists at all. For cruising, they recommend this 2 and 2 configuration as a balance between performance and convenience. For serious racers they still go with 4 full battens.

I took my old main into the sailmaker

and said it sets like a shoe. He replied you need two and two. Two full uppers in the sky? Aye. And lowers are partials? Yep, just like your teeth. Scott

Or try three full battens and the lower one partial. This allows for adjusting the draft on the lower portion of the sail and decreases friction just enough to avoid batcars. At least it did on my new Doyle---works great.
