Hello everyone, I'm getting close to sail replacement time. While pricing sails from different sail lofts I have noticed that North Sails are more expensive that most, say FX or the like. Is there any reason that makes them worth the extra cost? I noticed that the sail material is heavier than the Dacron used by Catalina. Thanks, Ar.

Is there a loft in your area? Nothing like helping out local business. I got quotes from North, Ullman, and Quantum when I was replacing the main on our C-18. All were the same weight material, all full batten, loose foot. I went with Quantum....they were $300. cheaper than North, cheaper than Ullman, but their personal attention sold me. When it's time to replace my current sails, they will get my business. Now I know that living in the San Diego area gives me the advantage of having lofts right here. I know where I would never buy a sail from again, is the loft advertised here on Trailer-Sailor. They made a 135 for my C-18.....cheap...cheap...cheap, and no savings.

If your interested in North Sails you might also check out North Sails Direct. What use to be Cruising Direct. I think you will be surprised at the difference in price from most of the racing sails. I've use both the racing sails and the cruising sails. Bought a set last year and so far I'm more than happy with them. Oh one of the differences the racing set were cut right to the limit on size.

I've got a bunch of North Sails racing sails that came with Verboten. So far no complaints.

I had Ullman San Diego put reef pints in the Capri 16.5 main when we had it. They did a great job and the cost wasn't outrageous.

Just got a direct mail piece yesterday from North Sails advertising a 15% discount and free shipping if ordered by October 15th. Might call them and ask for the discount if NS is the way you want to go.

Check out the loft on the Chandlery portion of this website, and also Catalina Direct (from Ullman, I think). Catalina's original factory sails are cheapened in several areas. Catalina Direct sells a different sail than Catalina, from Ullman if I remember right.

Alan, I bought a Ulman fully battened, loose footed main for my C22 in 2006 through Catalina Direct and absolutly love it. The improvement in performance was amazing. To use a loose footed main you must have a working outhaul. I think with your attention to your rigging that this sail would be the best fit. North is great but unless you're planning on racing I don't think the cost is worth it.

Thanks for the opinions, I kind of figured that part of the price was the name...I don't race but want quality sails for my money. AR

I have purchased sails from Mack. The quality is first rate, the price is better than most others, and they are made in the US. Give them a call for a quote.

AR,
I think you'll find North Cruising sails are not only priced close to other lofts, but you may be surprised when you see just how reasonable they are. The new mainsail to my door just this last spring my was five and half boat bucks. The racing main I once had added three more, which was still in line with many other lofts.

I'm not at all associated with North Sails exccept that I have a great Genny with their name on it but in my mail today they sent me a flyer and they are actually having a sale right now 15% off and free shipping if ordered before Oct. 15, 2010:

Anyone have any experience with the "Direct from our loft" sails you find on Ebay when you search for Catalina 22?
