I am looking for detailed info on changing the running rigging on an O'Day 240. Seems simple enough, but I've never had a boat with internal rigging. There seems to be something other that a straight line from one end of the boom to the other. Could there be a pulley or something in there? It appears there is one line at one end and two lines at the other, and pulling on both of them at one end pulls the single line at the other? Hate to sound so stupid, I just don't want to pull something out with no way to see whats happening inside. The mast seems simple, just not sure about the boom.
Thanks,
joe

Are you refering to the outhaul for the mainsail?? yes it has a block (pulley) inside most likely and you would may have to drill out the rivets and remove the boom end/s to access it. ( what we did last winter on mine) also removed about 5lbs of bird nests.
Good luck!

We just re-did our out haul rigging (new sheave and line) in the boom to our Tartan 27' this spring.
You will need to take at least one boom end off closest to to the out haul line exit point. Once you open it up it becomes much easier to handle. It is also probably worth doing with the boom removed from the boat.
One trick I used to thread the new line down our boom was to send a 1 oz. fishing weight on light fishing line down the boom by raising the outer end and rotating it until the weight popped out the other end. Then just pull the new line through with the messenger line.
There is likely to be at least a 2:1 mechanical advantage to the out haul contained in the boom, so yes there will be block(s) or pulley(s) in there.
There is nothing stupid about asking questions. Take it off the boat, open it up and you will see that it is (hopefully) a straight forward maintenance job.

If you are replacing halyards in the mast there are other considerations to take into account. If there is currently a rope to wire halyard in the mast then will the sheaves (blocks) at the top of the mast accept a line without tearing it up quickly? Most people seem to like to replace halyards with low stretch (higher priced) line like Sta set-X rather then have the combination wire/line halyards. Without the right shaped groove in the sheave on top an all line halyard may not last as long as you would like.
Ask me how I know this.
Dig in and good luck.

As a component of the reefing system, there's a pair of blocks inside the boom. They are basically coupled shackel-to-shackel. (It's is a standard marine hardware item; the two blocks are permanently attached to each other.) For the aft block, a line is tied to the clew end of the boom. That line goes thru the block and returns to the boom end and up to the leach of the mail sail. For the forward block, a line comes up from the deck, around a sheeve near the gooseneck, into the boom, around the forward block, and exits at the gooseneck. This line pulls the mainsail tack down to the gooseneck for reefing.

The coupled blocks are small enough to slip thru the clew-end casting on the tip of the boom. No 'butchering' required for removal.

I have an ODAY 240 there are 2 internal lines in the boom. The main outhaul and the main reffing line. There isn't much of a mechanical advantage on either of mine, but yours might be different. Taking the boom end off would be interesting to see exactly what is in there.

From the owners manual here are the specs of the rest of the running rigging:

Main Halyard 3/8" ULS-RED 70' "A" end: OS 6553 (that's the shackle for the main) and "B" end Whip
Main Sheet 3/8" LS-RED 39' "A" end Eye and "B" end Whip
Jib Sheet 3/8" LS-Blue 52' Whip/Whip (x2)
T-Lift 1/4" LS-White 24' Eye/Eye
T-Lift Tail 1/4" LS-white 15' SH 93-42/Burn
I also have a boom vang which isn't listed in the manual.

Hope this helps.
