I need to purchase a new jib roller furling for my 1985 Catalina 30. What specs. do I need to know to start looking at different brands? Any brands or types you all are partial to?

Talk to a local rigger

He should give you a good deal if you order it now. I love my Furlex. Tim R.

Take a look at the SpinTec on this site.

Jay: Check out SpinTec. Great stuff and a great price. Stay away from CDI unless you have a 25' or smaller.

How big is the Catalina?

All of the furler's offered here on this site are good. a 30ft. boat and over, I'm partial to the Harken cruising furler, hard to beat at $1198. Let me know if you can find any of them for less money, anywhere. Dave Groshong Customer Service SailboatOwners.com Toll Free 877-932-7245 ext.116, Mon-Fri, 9-5 Pacific

All the big brands..

All the big brands are good. I chose a Harken MK-IV last spring because my rigger highly recommended it and stands behind it as does Harken. Tim went with a Furlex because that's what his rigger installs and sells and they too are excellent products. Are you getting a sense that you should use a reputable rigger and buy what they recommend? Furling units from the following manufacturers are good & well respected products: Furlex, Schaefer, Hood, Harken & Pro-Furl. Only use a CDI if your boat is small and stay away from the off brands.. I installed my own furler but still bought local in case I had questions or needed parts. As much as I like Phil and the boys here at Sailboatowners.com I think you're best to buy a furler locally even if you do install it yourself. Measuring and installing a furler is about a 7-8 on the difficulty scale with 1 being easy and 10 being hard so measure ten times cut once!!!

As much as I love my local rigger

These units are designed to be owner installed. Any product you purchase here comes with the manufacturer's warranty as well as a satisfaction guarantee from us. As I mentioned before, let me know if you can find any furler we offer for less money. Dave Groshong SailboatOwners.com

Happy with CDI

My 27 has a CDI flexible furler and it works great. It has never jammed on me and it is easy to unfurl and furl my jib. I'm not sure why it was mentioned not to use one above a 25 footer though... Manny

CDI not good on Catalina 30

I had a CDI on my Catalina 30. It was definately too small. The smaller drum size limited the dia. of the line as well as the mechanical advantage. Tony B

Because I had one..

Because I had a CDI on my old Catalina 30 and it was grossly inadequate, jammed constantly and had massive foil twist when ever I tried to furl it! I switched to a Furlex and it was like going from a Yugo to a Lexus and there was absolutely NO comparison!! When I said don't use a CDI on a boat over 25 feet it was from first hand experience..

CDI

I had a older CDI on my 28' Pearson and it was barely adequate. I struggled with it for 2 years and it was on my upgrade list when I sold the boat. I think the older models do work better but why take a chance on such an important piece of equipment. Dave, I appreciate your comments but buying one from a local rigger and installing yourself, I feel, is the best way to go. That way if you have any problems or questions you can get the rigger onsite to help you out. My rigger installed for free because I also bought a new headsail from him. Tim R.

Wow

I'm really surprised with the all the issues with the CDI, considering how I haven't any problems. No jams ever, no foil twist, no binding, plenty of leverage, etc. I don't know if it makes a difference, but my furler has the ball bearings. My 27' has a pretty good sized rig on it and a large jib (pretty sure its a 150, but maybe a 135 - i've never measured it), and the boat is pretty heavy for it's size. I am also impressed with their customer service. At the Philly sailboat show last year I spent some time at the CDI booth asking questions since I was replacing the rigging on my boat. They were extremely patient and helpful. Even though I wouldn't hesitate to recommend CDI, I guess maybe it's best to go with one of the other manufacturers mentioned. Manny

Hey Tim, thanks for your input.....

Just trying to save ya'll some money. I routinely see the Harken cruising furler unit 1 being sold for $301 ($1499) more than we sell it for. The new generation of furlers are much more owner install friendly than just a year or two past. Dave Groshong SailboatOwners.com

reply to Mainsail

Mainsail suggests to "measure twice and cut once." Damn! Maybe that's what the problem is. I cut this thing three times and it's STILL too short.

Furlex

Although we've only a Furlex 100S on our 27-footer, I'd go with the 200S on a Catalina 30. We've never had a problem. I'd pay close attention to Maine Sail's opinion of CDI on this one.

I, too, have a Furlex 200

On my H28.5. While I probably could have gotten by with the 100, the 200 provides a lot more strength and confidence. I really like the quality of the unit.

schaeffer

I installed a Schaeffer on my Mirage 27 this yr. It was easy to install and is bullet proof. My dad has had one for 20 yrs. on his Bristal 40 without a single problem. Not the furler I'd choose if I seriously raced the boat though. Practical Sailor did a review a yr or so ago on furlers.

Jib furler - Spin Tech

Sailboatlover -- Installed the SpinTech unit myself on a H-33 1980 3 years ago. It is very solid and have had no problems at all. Of course, sail changes are more involved due to the design but you cannot get a jam or halyard wrap due to the lack of an attached halyard. Henry
