I am ready to replace the Hood furler on my 1992 Hunter 33.5. My sailmaker has suggested an above-deck furler such as a Schaefer or Harken, but advised that the hatch for the anchor locker would have to be modified to permit it to be fully opened without striking the furler drum. Question: Has anyone with a similar Hunter replaced the roller furler? If you did, diy you place the furler drum above deck, and how did you address the issue of the anchor locker hatch? Any advice/comments would be appreciated. Mike

35/35.5s as well?

Curious about 35 and 35.5 Hunters as well. Don't really care for the continuous line Hood furlers below decks. What are the other alternatives? Hoping this will give Michael and I BOTH more responses to the same question.

Additional Question

My 1993 H33.5 has a single line Hood system below deck. It rubs the aft section of the recess it sits in while under tension. It appears the drum is off center (at rest)to the rear by 2-3 inches. Are they all like that. I can't even service the drum without disconnecting the whole system. Ideas? Jeff Morrison

Michael, check with...

...Pompanette in NH (www.pompanette.com). They may cut you a deal for a new SL Hood furler to replace the continuous loop furler. It uses the same extrusion and the drum is the same size for replacement. I did this a few years ago and I understand that they still offer the upgrade.

Upgrade roller furling

Last year I upgraded my furler on my 35.5 and Paul is correct that Pompanette does offer a deal when you upgrade. Actually, I just needed new bearings. As I recall, the bearing alone would have cost well over $300 and I was able to replace the entire lower unit for around $500.
