THINKING OF INSTALLING NEW E80 RAYMARINE NAVIGATION DISPLAY WITH RADAR. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THE FOLLOWING. ONE DISPLAY WITH 2KW 18" DOME 15 METER CABLE. RAYSTAR 125 GPS SENSOR. MY UNSERSTANDING IS TO HAVE RADAR OVER-LAY I NEED A PATHFINDER SMART HEADING SENSOR WITH FLUXGATE COMPASS. DO I NEED FLUXGATE COMPASS. I HAVE RAYMARINE AUTOPILOT . THE BOAT IS A BENETEAU 40CC WITH RAYTHEON 520 CHART PLOTTER. THANKS I WILL RUN OUT MONEY SOON.

Heading Sensor
Since you already have the fluxgate compass you need Raymarin p/n E12101, Gyro Plus 2 - external rate gyro transducer w/o Compass. You'll get overlay without the high speed heading but it won't be as fluid, using GPS heading data (updates only 1x/sec vs. 10x/sec with heading sensor). Hope this helps, Trevor

In my somewhat limited experience with this system, on a friends boat, I don't think the overlay is of any help inshore. Offshore would be a totally different story. Was out with a friend of mine a couple of weeks ago, and in Lake Ponchatrain, there was so much information on the screen when doing an overlay, it was difficult to tell what or where anything was.Very, very cluttered. In my opinion when inshore, a split screen display is the way to go. Much easier to pick up individual blips on the radar, and much easier to see waypoints and markers on the GPS. Good thing is, you can experiment, try each and every type of display, and decide what works best for you.

Talked to a Raymarine certified tech when I installed my E120 last year. he indicated that with the speed of a sail boat, the faster updating wasn't really necessary. now if you do consistently higher speeds it might be a big different story. I happen to like the radar overlay. I say try it without and if its not accurate, it's an easy add on latter. and you can de-clutter the display to make things much easier to see. Bryce
