I'm looking at a JRC 12" Radome Radar. Bought their 18" Radome model 9 years ago because the size and price were right and the word was that JRC supplied the components for most other brands. The 18" unit did what I needed and no problems. Any comments on the 12" model would be appreciated.

I have one

I have a JRC 1000, which is the small antenna. Going on five years old. It works fine, and has been just about trouble free. When I first got it, had a problem with the screen fogging from the inside. Called JRC and they said they had some problems with a few units doing this but had a fix. I talked to a man there named Pat, who was very knowledgable and helpful. Sent it in, and in almost no time it was back. Not a problem since. My personal feeling is that a radar with over a 16 mile range on a sailboat really doesn't gain you much if anything.

Thanks for the advice. Sounds like what I need.

JRC's are decent..

JRC's are decent units and they, Japan Radio Company, make many of the components for other manufacturers. That being said, they generally have less features $ for $ than then low cost stand alone Furuno's do. The Furuno's offer a better value, at current street prices IMHO, as JRC seems to have lost a slight bit of pricing edge to Furuno lately.. For instance the small stand alone model 1623 from Furuno is a 2.2kw 15" dome and sells for around $1049.00 The JRC 1000 MKII is a 12" 1.5kw dome and sells for about the same but no one seems to have it in stock so perhaps they are replacing it..

Position data stopped working

I have a 2002 JRC1000, works great. I love the GPS location at the bottom right of screen. Last year it stopped working. I have checked out all the connections and my Garmin GPS, everything is OK. Could there be a problem with the unit. Has anyone had a similar problem?

Many times..

Many times when you are sending NEMA data you need to set the parameters in the set up menus. For the Garmin you'll need to set up it's it's NEMA input/output protocols and you'll need to do it on the JRC too. Perhaps you hit a default settings "re-set" on one unit or the other or you have a faulty connection between the two. It's generally quite rare that only one aspect of a menu driven device stops working. Usually if there is an internal fault or problem lots of other items will also not work. My guess is that this is a communications problem between units.
