I have a 1989 cat 30 TRBS with Wing. It has the standard Universal M25XP Engine. When I purchased it it had a 2 Blade prop and since I do not do much racing I have thought about replacing the 2 Blade with a 3. I have heard you have much more control in reverse and slightly more speed under power.

Cam anyone verify this and if possible provide the proper size and pitch so that if I decide to move ahead I can get something ordered before I splash.

I had a Cat 30 with the same engine. My boat came with a 3 blade Campbell sail prop. It worked pretty well.

I have the Model 18 and am thinking of changing props for the same reason. Currently, backing is something I only do when I need to work on something, in calm wind, when no one is watching. Otherwise I provide much comic relief for anyone around. Probably will switch out when I have a bottom job later this summer.

I have one.........

I have a 13x10 three blade bronze prop on my '91 Cat 30 MKII, wing/std. rig, with a 25X Universal. Speed under power tops at 6.2 knots (by GPS on slack tide) and I back into my slip about 80% of the time. Only strong cross winds prevent this. Since I never had a 2 blade, I can't offer a comparison.
Good Luck and Happy Sailing...

I have a MkI fin keel with a standard three blade prop and I would say that there is some considerable prop walk with this prop as well.

When I was new to the boat though the guy that taught me to drive it showed me some techniques for using prop walk to dock and undock the boat, and to turn it around in it's own length in a tight fairway. I was so new to this kind of boating I just assumed prop walk was a good thing! :)

Propwalk is actually kind of handy. took me a while to figure out, the obvious, that the boat was pivoting on the keel as the centerline. I will put reverse on about when my keel passes my slip on the port side, which lines me up nicely. It is at this point things get dicey, unless I get a running start at it the boat will not hold a straight line, and 25 feet is just not enough. Somebody told me that the model 18 and the model 25 turn in opposite directions, is this true?

Thanks for all of the great feedback. I actually have gotten quite good in managing prop walk. I usually back it down and take advantage of the situation and the desire to pull to port. Only under certain conditions will I simply pull straight into my slip. I usually return at slack and then back it down. I still want to consider a 3 Blade. I have a local Propeller Shop who obviously, does not specialize in sailboats, but could order anything. Does anyone know what size and pitch, shaft size I believe is 1" I would need to order. Some of the websites I was directed to ask for about 1,000 different dimensions. It is an 89 Catalina 30. How many were made and all are the same.Thanks.

My 89 cat std rig m25xp, like RPLL 46, uses a 13/10, one inch shaft dia.

Shipwreck66,

My M18 turns to the right in forward gear. I'd assume that is the same as an M25 but I can't be sure. I've had a few M25 owners operate my boat and they didn't seem to have any obvious confusion on it's handling characterisics though.

Did some comparisions on fin keel 270's, with a 2 blade the boat would back to starboard a little with engine at idle, with a 3 blade can't back to starboard at all with engine idling.
Side by side the 3 blade boat was slower under sail.
So,a 3 blade is slower and the propwalk is stronger.

I have an '84 M-25 with a Michigan Sailor 2-blade prop, 13" dia., RH rot., 12deg pitch and typically go 5.6knts@ 2300 rpm. I'm new to sailing and this boat, but was told by the prev. owner, that in his experience, this prop had the best combination of performance under sail, motoring and control under backing. The RH backs to port and I was able to find a slip where that is the desired propwalk direction.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
I am running a 3 blade 13 X 10 prop with a Universal M 25 XP. At cruising speed I usually see about 5.5 knots (give or take because of current).

Keep your prop clean if you are in salt water. Any little growth adversely affects performance and slows you down big time.

I would love to have a Kiwi prop or a Max Prop but that is some serious $$$$$$
